Q Once the printer driver is installed, how do I configure the printer driver settings to utilize the infrared port?

A
  1. Click on Start/ Settings/ Control Panel, and double-click on Infrared icon. (If the Infrared icon is not present in Control Panel, refer to your computer documentation for instructions on configuring your infrared port.) Click on the Options tab and read which COM port is mentioned under the line Providing application support on... Make a note of that COM port.
  2. Click on Start/ Settings/ Printers right-click on the BJC-85 icon and click on Properties. Once in the printer driver properties click on the Details tab and in the field named Print to the following port choose the same COM port that is mentioned in the Infrared Device Monitor as described above. If the error message "There was an error writing to COMx..." appears on the screen, turn the printer OFF and restart the computer, making sure that all pending jobs are deleted upon exiting from Win 95/98. Once back in Win 95/98, try printing the Nozzle test once again as described under 3).

Q The printer settings are set correctly, but the printer does not print to the IRDA port.

A

Important: infrared support for the BJC-85 will only operate in Windows 95/98.

Confirm that the Infrared Device Monitor is installed on the computer. Click on Start/ Settings/ Control Panel. If no Infrared icon is present in Control Panel, refer to your computer documentation for instructions on configuring your infrared port.

If the Infrared Device Monitor is already installed on the computer, but is still not recognizing the printer, follow the checklist below (possibly following the order in which they are described). Once the BJC-85 printer is recognized, the Win95/98 Infrared Device Monitor under the Status tab will name the Canon BJC-85 as being a device in range.

Be sure that a small icon appears on the right side of the Taskbar near the clock showing a blinking red/green eye (by default, the Infrared Device Monitor will not activate automatically when Win95/98 is started). If no such item is present, click on Start/ Settings/ Control Panel, and double-click on Infrared icon in order to activate it.

Be sure that the infrared port on the side of the BJC-85 is pivoted out. In many cases, communication with the computer will not occur unless the printer's infrared port is opened up and facing the computer. Additionally, be sure there are no obstacles between the two infrared ports, and that printer and computer are not offset by an angle wider than 30 degrees. If indeed the infrared port needs to be opened, or the printer unit needs to be brought closer to the computer, after doing so turn the printer OFF and then ON.

Communication through the infrared port will only occur when the printer is turned ON and ON-LINE. If the green light is blinking, remove the paper and turn the printer OFF and ON. If the blinking light problem persists, the problem may reside with the cartridge.

Q Unable to communicate with the printer (parallel connection)

A Make sure that there is a direct connection between the printer and computer. Remove any switchboxes, parallel port zip drives, scanners, or other peripherals that are on the LPT port. Reboot the computer. Also ensure that any software for these devices are removed or disabled. If no print occurs or there is an error, then try another cable.

Q Unable to communicate with the printer (USB connection)

A

Make sure that there is a direct connection between the printer and USB port of the computer. Reboot the computer with the printer's USB cable unattached and reconnect the cable once the computer has restarted.

Use the following troubleshooting checklist to establish USB communications between the printer and computer:

Ensure your printer is powered on and connected directly to the USB port on the computer.

Ensure the USB port is functioning properly in the Device Manager.

  • You can access the Device Manager by opening Control Panel and then double-clicking on the System icon. Click the Device Manager tab. At the bottom of the device list, click the [+] beside Universal Serial Bus Controller. Under this, you should have a line for a USB Universal Host Controller and another line for a USB Root Hub. If either line does not appear or either line is marked with a red X or yellow (!), you will need to contact your computer manufacturer's technical support to have your USB driver properly configured.
  • If you have an additional entry, such as Unknown Device under Universal Serial Bus Controller, the printer may be showing up this way because the driver was not properly loaded. Highlight Unknown Device and click Remove, then confirm it and restart the computer.

Ensure the printer is showing up in the Device Manager properly.

  • Access the Device Manager by opening Control Panel and then double-clicking on the System icon. Click the Device Manager tab. Locate Universal Serial Bus Controller and click the [+] beside it to expand it.
  • Ensure the BJC-XXXX or SXXX (XXXX being the printer model number, 2100, 3000, etc.) is listed here, along with Universal Host Controller and USB Root Hub. Ensure none of these devices have exclamation points or red X's.
  • The printer may also show up under Other Devices in the Device Manager if the driver did not install correctly. Click the [+] beside Other Devices (if it exists) to expand the category. If you see the printer, highlight it and click Remove, then confirm it and restart the computer.
  • If there is no listing at all for the printer, try reseating the USB cable in the same or different USB port on the computer.

Q The printer tried to print but colors are missing or they don't match.

A The BJ ink cartridge may be out of ink. Perform a Nozzle test by powering the printer off, hold the power button down until it beeps 4 times. The Nozzle test will show which tanks are empty. If no ink is dispersed, perform several head cleanings. With the printer on, press and hold the resume button until the printer beeps twice (3 times for a deep print head cleaning). If no ink is dispersed, you may need to replace the ink tank.
