Q Is the BJC 610 compatible with my parallel scanner, tape drive, or Zip drive?

A

The Canon BJC-610/620 printers have a bidirectional communication feature. This feature does not share the parallel port, and causes intermittent problems with some parallel port devices. You can correct this problem by downloading the Non-WPS Printer Drivers.
For Windows 3.x, download 720U16.exe from Windows Driver Downloads.
For Windows 95, download 720U95.exe from Windows Driver Downloads.

Q

Cleaning the Print Head

A

You may perform the print head cleaning from either Microsoft Windows Printing System software (WPS) or at the printer. Due to the ease of operation, we suggest performing the print head cleaning from the WPS.

Cleaning from the WPS:

  1. Access the WPS Printer Status window.

    For Windows 95:
Click Start and select Programs, Windows Printing System.
Click on BJC-610 Printer Status Window.

    For Windows 3.1:
Double-click on the Windows Printing System icon.
Double-click on the BJC-610 Windows Printing System icon.

  3. In Printer Options select the print head cleaning option you wish to perform.

Performing Cleanings From the Printer's Control Panel

Thorough cleaning from the printer's control panel:
First make sure the printer is turned on. On the printer's control panel press the Print Mode and faq_envelope buttons at the same time until the printer beeps and the Ink and faq_envelope lights flash. Press the print mode button six times OR until all lights are flashing. To start the cleaning, press the faq_envelope button until the printer beeps. When the cleaning is complete the indicator lights stop flashing.

Custom cleaning from the printer's control panel:
First make sure the printer is turned on. On the printer's control panel press the Print Mode and faq_envelope buttons at the same time until the printer beeps and the Ink and faq_envelope lights flash. Press the print mode button until the light indicating the color of the ink cartridge that needs to be cleaned is flashing. To start the cleaning, press the faq_envelope button until the printer beeps. When the cleaning is complete, the indicator lights stop flashing.

Print Head Cleaning Options

Thorough cleaning of all print head nozzles:
A new print head unit needs to be cleaned to ensure the best possible print quality. Also, you must perform a thorough cleaning if you insert the ink cartridge in the wrong slots or if quick cleanings do not solve your print quality problems. This procedure takes about three minutes.

Quick cleanings of all nozzles:
Use this method to improve print quality. This cleaning takes about two minutes.

Custom cleaning of selective print head nozzles:
Us this method to clean the print head nozzles of a new ink cartridge or if one color is not printing as clearly as you think it should. This cleaning takes about one minute.

Perform self test after print head cleanings to insure proper performance (see below).

Q After installing the driver and attempting to print, I got the message "printer not connected."

A Check to see if your printer is turned on and online, and that the Centronics-compatible Parallel Printer Cable is secure and is not connected to a switch box. Ensure the printer port is set to "LPT1: (ECP Printer Port)" in the printer setup under the Details tab, and that "enable bi-directional support for this printer" is selected under spool settings. Ensure that you have properly installed the Microsoft Windows Printing System diskettes that came with your printer. Finally, verify the cable is properly shielded and bi-directional.

Q Why didn't any ink come out on the paper?

A The cartridges are protected by a silver seal. Verify this has been removed, reseat the ink cartridge and perform the Print Head Cleaning procedure. If print head cleanings do not fix the problem, your BJ cartridge may be out of ink. Replace the cartridge and try printing again.

Q Why doesn't my printed page match the image on the screen?

A There are numerous reasons the printed output does not match the screen. Perform a self test. If colors are missing perform print head cleanings. Ensure you have selected the BJC-610 as the default printer. Check the settings of the Microsoft Windows Printing System. For instance, one of the more common reasons for mismatched color images is that an inappropriate Halftoning setting is chosen. Also, keep in mind that a perfect match to screen colors is not always possible due to the difference in color technologies of the monitor and printer output.

Q My printer has a print head error. What do I do?

A

The print head unit may not be installed correctly, the contacts on the compartment cover may not be touching the terminals on the print head, or the print head unit may be damaged. First, turn the printer off and unplug it. Then Reinstall the Print Head, plug the printer in and turn it on. If the error does not clear, contact the Canon Customer Care Center.

Reinstalling the Print Head
Turn the printer off. Open the front cover, remove all four ink cartridges and set them upright on a level surface with their number labels facing up. Do not remove the print head unit yet. Next, close the printer cover, turn the printer back on and perform the quick print head cleaning.
When the cleaning is complete, turn the printer off and open the printer's cover. Open the print head compartment cover.
Grasp the print head unit by the sides and lift it out.
Inspect the nozzles for any dust or debris, then reseat/reinstall it. Close the compartment cover. You should hear 2 distinct clicks. Once the compartment cover is firmly closed, reinstall the ink cartridges and then close the printer cover.

Q Why do I receive a "not enough memory" error message?

A There may be one or more factors involved, such as:

  • The computer may not have enough resources available.
  • Try closing all applications not in use.
  • Turn off Print Manager (Win 3.x) or Print Spooler (Win 95).
  • Lower the printer resolution.
  • The Windows swap file may be corrupt. Run Scan or Scandisk and Defrag.
  • Conventional Memory may be too low.

Q Does Canon have optimized drivers for Windows 95?

A The Microsoft Windows Printing System is already designed or optimized for use with Windows 95.

Q Why is my printer printing garbage or extra characters?

A

The first step is to ensure the BJC-610 is selected as the default printer.

There may be print jobs queued up in Print Manager. Delete any pending print jobs, and attempt to print again. If the problem persists, disable Print Manager.

If you would like to use Print Manager, make sure you have enough space left on your hard drive, and you have a valid SET TEMP statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

There may be a communication problem between the printer and your computer. Check to see if your parallel printer cable is securely connected to the PC and the printer.

Q Why won't my printer do a self test?

A Check to see if all cable connections are secure. If generating a self test from the Microsoft Windows Printing System, make sure the printer is turned on and paper is loaded before See above for Generating a Self Test from WPS. If generating a self test from the printer's control panel, make sure the printer is turned off and paper is loaded before See above fro Generating a Self Test from the Printer.

Q What causes General Protection Faults or Illegal Operation errors?

A y number of things may cause a GPF. Most often GPFs are caused by system resources, corrupt files or file conflicts. Try running Scan or Scandisk to check hard disk files. Check to see if system resources are low. If they are low, reduce the number of open applications. Go to the Startup Group and remove any icons for programs you don't want or need to start. Also, check for the existence of .tmp files created by a previous error and remove them.
