Q How do I install the printer driver in Windows 95/98?

A

Note: The [Printers] folder may display other printer drivers which have already been installed. If you see a printer driver icon for the older version of the printer driver, delete it by highlighting the icon, selecting [File] - [Delete] to display the related file delete message, then clicking on the [Yes] button.

  1. Unplug the printer's power cord
  2. Turn on the computer. After Windows starts up, plug the printer back in.
  3. From the [Start] menu, click [Run...].
  4. Click [Browse...].
  5. Select the disk drive containing the printer driver installation disk.
Note: Since the name of the floppy disk drive or CD-ROM drive differs depending on the computer, refer to your computer manual or contact the computer manufacturer.
  6. Choose [Setup.exe], and click [Open].
  7. Click [OK].
  8. The [Software License Agreement] dialog box is displayed. If you agree to the terms of the License, click [Yes]. If you do not agree, you cannot use the printer driver.
  9. The [Setup Type] dialog box is displayed. Select [Easy], then click [Next]. If you select [Custom], the [Select Add Printer] dialog box is displayed and you can choose the BJ printer and which printer port to use.
  10. When the Insert Disk dialog box is displayed, specify the directory for disk 2 or floppy disk #2, then click [OK] to proceed with copying.
  11. Repeat the operations on the screen for disks #3, #4, and #5.

Note:If you are installing more than one printer driver, you need to choose the printer driver as default. Select the printer driver from the [Printers] folder, then check [Set As Default] in the [File] menu.

If Windows does not recognize the printer:
  1. Insert the CD labeled Printer Setup into your CD drive
  2. If Setup starts automatically go to step 4
  3. If Setup doesn't start, from the taskbar, click Start and then Run
  4. Type D:\ SETUP(where D: is your CD drive... most CD drives are either D: or E:)
  5. Select "Continue with Printer and Canon Creative Setup" and click Next
  6. Select your Printer Type
  7. Select this as your Default Printer
  8. Select the LPT Port and click Next
  9. Confirm the settings and click Next

Q How do I install the printer in Windows NT 4.0?

A

To use this printer driver with software application packages that operate with Microsoft Windows NT, it is important that you follow the installation procedure as shown below.

Note: It is necessary to log on with full control access privileges for printer settings to install the printer driver successfully.

  1. Start Windows NT on your system and log on as a member of the Administrators Group or Power User Group.
  2. Click on the [Start] button.
  3. Point to [Settings].
  4. Click on [Printers] to display the Printers folder.
Note: The icons of the existing printer drivers that are installed in your system appear in the Printers folder. If an older version of the printer driver you wish to install appears in the Printers folder, delete the printer driver. Select the icon of the older version of the printer driver and click on [Delete] in the [File] menu. Click on the [Yes] button when the message appears to delete the printer driver. After deleting the older version of the printer driver, restart Windows NT.
  5. Double-click on the [Add Printer] icon to start the "Add Printer Wizard".
  6. Follow the instructions of the Add Printer Wizard to proceed.
  7. Click on the check box next to [LPT1:] or the port you want to use, when the list of available ports appears. Click on the [Next] button to proceed.

  10. Select the desired printer you want to install, and click on the [Next] button. Depending on your system, if you are upgrading from a previous version of this printer driver, you must choose [Replace existing driver] after you select your printer even though Windows NT recommends that you keep the existing driver. Otherwise the driver will not be upgraded successfully.
  11. Follow the instructions of the Add Printer Wizard until the installation is finished. An icon for your printer will then appear in the Printers folder.

You are now ready to print from any Windows NT software application package. The driver is automatically set for printing in color.

Notes:
  • When installing multiple printers, it is necessary to specify the default printer. Select the icon of the printer driver you wish to set as a default printer and click on [Set As Default] in the [File] menu.
  • If the installation was successful, "Canon Your-Printer-Name Properties" should appear for the name of the printer dialog box. Note that the Microsoft version will display "Canon Bubble-Jet Your-Printer-Name Properties".

Q Printing does not start due to an error writing to LPT1, what do I check?

A

Power Cord - Make sure the printer is plugged into a power outlet.
Parallel Cable - Make sure the parallel cable is securely fastened to the computer and the printer.
LPT1 Port - Make sure the printer is connected to LPT1.
Switching Device or External Buffer - Disconnect the switching device or external buffer and print with the printer connected directly to the computer. If you can then print normally, the fault is probably in the switching device or external buffer. Consult the switching device or external buffer supplier.
Spool Setting - Open the printer Properties dialog box. On the Details tab, click Spool Settings and then select "Print directly to the printer."
Printer Port LPT1 Status - Double-click on the System icon. On the Device Manager tab, double-click Ports (COM & LPT). Double-click Canon BJ LPT Printer Port (LPT1). The Device status should read "This device is working properly."
BJ Printer Driver - Remove the installed BJ printer driver and then install the printer driver again. To uninstall the printer driver, click Start and select Programs. Then select BJ Printer and click Uninstall. Follow the onscreen instructions. For details about installing the printer driver, see "How do I install the printer driver?" above.
Windows Printing System (WPS) driver - Change the WPS driver port setting to FILE or delete the WPS driver. To change the port setting, open the WPS Driver properties window. In the Details tab, select FILE: (Creates a file on disk) in the "Print to the following Port" setting. To delete the WPS driver, click Start and select Programs. Then select Windows Printing System and click Uninstaller. Follow the onscreen instructions. To continue using the WPS printer, install a second parallel port.

Q The cartridge will not return to the home position

A The BJ cartridge is not making proper electrical contact with the carriage. The cartridge may need to be re-seated. Lift the locking lever to unlock the cartridge, remove the cartridge, re-seat it, and lock it in place again. This may take several tries. If this is unsuccessful, the cartridge will need to be replaced.

Q The printer will not print from Windows

A If you try to print and nothing happens, or you receive an error such as "Error Writing to LPT 1" or "Printer not Responding", shut down the computer and unplug the printer's power cord. Make sure that there is a direct connection between the printer and computer. Remove any switchboxes, parallel port Zip drives, scanners, or other peripherals that are on the LPT port. Plug the printer's power cord back in and turn the computer on. Close any running applications. If no print occurs then try another cable.

Q The image does not match the screen

A Make sure that the driver is set up correctly for the ink cartridge used. For the photo ink cartridge, make sure the Color model section on the Graphics tab is set to Photo color and that on the Paper tab the media type is High Resolution Paper. The previously mentioned steps will not enhance the plain color cartridge. It will only make the printing distorted.

Q A color is missing on a printout

A A BJ ink cartridge may be out of ink. Perform a nozzle test pressing the button twice. The nozzle test will show which tanks are empty. If one or more of the colors are missing then the entire color palette will be skewed. All of the tanks must be full for proper color matching. If no ink is dispersed, perform several head cleanings - by pressing the button twice.
