Before installing the Canon Windows driver, make sure your computer system has the following minimum configuration:
386sx personal computer
4 MB of free random access memory (RAM)
6 MB of available hard disk space
VGA color graphics monitor with a minimum resolution of 640x480
MS-DOS 5.0 or later
Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher
Centronics-compatible Parallel Printer Cable
Centronics-compatible Parallel Printer Cable (for BJC-4100 and BJC-210)
For reliable communication between your computer and the printer, Canon recommends a Centronics-compatible parallel printer cable. This cable should be six feet or less in length. A properly shielded Centronics parallel cable should also work.
1. To install the cable, make sure both the printer and computer are turned off.
2. Align the cable connector with the printer's interface port so the shapes match.
3. Press the cable connector into the printer's port and secure it by snapping the two wire clips into the cable connector.
4. Connect the other end of the parallel interface cable to the parallel interface port on the computer.
You can run Microsoft Windows and use the Color Advisor with 4MB of RAM. However, for optimum performance, Canon recommends that your computer have 8 MB of RAM. Microsoft Windows and other applications use 4MB of RAM; to speed its performance, the Color Advisor needs an additional 4MB of RAM.
Your operating system environment and applications may have different
requirements.
How do I attach the printer to the computer?
After removing the packaging tape from the various locations on the printer, turn the printer around and attach the AC adapter to the connection on the lower right corner. Next attach your Centronics-compatible Parallel Printer Cable to the connection on the upper right corner. Connect the other end of the printer cable to the computer's parallel port. Plug the AC adapter into an open wall outlet.
How do I install the cartridge?
Make sure the Centronics-compatible, parallel interface cable and the power cord are attached.
Press the POWER button. The POWER light comes on.
Open the front cover by pulling both sides of the cover forward with both hands. See Diagram 3-1.
Diagram 3-1
When installing the cartridge, avoid touching the circuit board and the film cable.
Lift the green lock lever on the cartridge holder.
Unwrap the ink cartridge. If you unwrap an additional ink cartridge, install one in the printer and store the other one in the BJ cartridge container. Take the ink cartridge you are installing in the printer out of its protective packaging. Peel off the protective foil.
Lift off the orange cap from the print head and then remove the orange tape.
Slide the BJ cartridge straight into the cartridge holder until the
cartridge is pressed against the back of the holder. Be careful not to touch
the rollers with the print head.
Press the green lock lever down completely, so that the marks on the lever
and the cartridge holder align. The BJ cartridge is now positioned and
locked. NOTE: Do not move the mechanism that houses the BJ cartridge. Attempting to move the BJ cartridge holder will damage the printer.
Set the paper thickness lever to the left.
Close the front cover.
How do I install the drivers that came with the printer?
The following instructions assume you have the 3-disk driver set. If you have the 5-disk driver set, then the disk will be labeled Windows 3.1 BJ Driver Disks, or Windows 95 BJ Driver Disks.
Windows 95
Place Disk 1 in your floppy drive.
Click on Start
Move to Settings
Click on Printers
Click on the Add Printers icon.
Follow the dialog boxes to the Add Printer Wizard dialog box.
Click on Have Disk.
Select your printer from the list.
Windows 95 will now step you through the rest of the installation.
Windows 3.x
Insert the disk labeled Windows Driver and Color Advisor Disk 1 of 3 or Windows 3.1 BJ Driver Disk 1 in Drive A: (or Drive B:).
Using the left button on your mouse in Program Manager, double-click on the Main Icon.
Within the Main Group, double-click on the Control Panel icon. From the Control Panel double-click on the Printer icon.
Click on the Add button.
In the sections labeled List of Printers, highlight "Install Unlisted or Updated Printer Drivers" and click Install.
Click OK.
Follow the directions on screen to finish installing your printer.
Does Canon have optimized drivers for Windows 95
Yes! The driver that ships in the box with the printer is compatible with Windows 3.x and Windows 9. The latest version is available from the Windows Driver Downloads but be sure to check the version of your driver as you may already have the latest release.
Why didn't the computer ask for the third driver disk?
Canon has several driver sets that are used for either Windows 95 or Windows 3.x. If you received the set of three diskettes, the computer will only ask for the first two disks. The third disk is the BJ Setup Utility Disk for printing in DOS.
What is Color Advisor?
Color Advisor is Canon's exclusive software that colors documents automatically even when your software does not support color. If your software already supports color, Color Advisor expands the range of colors you can use within the software.
Do I need new drivers if I upgrade from Windows 3.x to Windows 95?
No! The drivers that came with the printer work fine in Windows 95. Your driver includes support for Windows 95 specific functions (Image Color Matching and EMF Spooling). If you would like to download the latest driver version, click on Windows Driver Downloads in the left margin of this page.
Why does my BJ printer only print 1/2 or 3/4 pages?
Some PCs currently on the market are not set for a mode that is compatible with some of Canon's Bubble Jet printers. See Canon's Technical Bulletin below for troubleshooting techniques.

Why does the power light continuously blink?
The power light continuously blinks if the cartridge is not making correct contact. Remove and reseat the cartridge to fix the problem. See installing the print cartridge above.
What do I do if the printer will not power on?
Make sure the AC adapter is connected securely into the printer and into a wall outlet. If the printer still does not respond try the printer in another wall outlet. If the problem still persists, call Technical Support.
How do I load the paper?
To load the paper, set the paper thickness lever, the paper selection lever, and the paper support before loading the paper.
Why does the cartridge move but the ink does not print?
Check to see if the orange shipping tape has been removed from
the bottom of the ink cartridge. (See installing the print cartridge above.) If it is removed and the problem persists, perform the Print Head Cleaning procedure. If the print head cleanings do not fix the problem, your BJ cartridge may be out of ink. Replace the cartridge and try printing again.
Why is my printer printing garbage or extra characters?
The first step is to ensure the BJC-210 is selected as the default printer. To do this, go to the Print Setup.
There may be print jobs queued up in Print Manager. Delete any pending print jobs, and attempt to print again. If the problem persists, then disable Print Manager.
If you would like to use Print Manager, make sure you have enough space left on your hard drive, and you have a valid SET TEMP statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
There may be a communication problem between the printer and your computer. Check to see if your Centronics-compatible Parallel Printer Cable is securely connected to the PC and the printer. If the cable is secure refer to the FAQs above.
How do I turn off my printer?
To turn off the printer press the power button. After turning off the printer always wait at least five seconds before turning the printer's power on.
