Q The printer tries to print but either no ink is dispersed or colors are missing from the document, what can I do?

A

If your printer tries to print but no ink appears, colors are missing from the printed document or horizontal white streaks appear in the printed document; confirm the status of the BJ cartridge by printing a Nozzle Check pattern.

  1. To print a Nozzle Check Pattern from Windows, make sure that you have paper in the printer.
  2. Click the Start button on the Windows Taskbar.
  3. Select Settings, and then click Printers.
Click your right mouse button on the BJC-2100 Series icon, and then click Properties on the menu that appears.
  4. Click the Maintenance tab, and then click the Nozzle Check Pattern icon in the Test Prints box.
  5. When the confirmation message appears, click OK.

After Nozzle Check pattern prints, examine the print out.
If you are using a BC-21e or BC-22e ink cartridge, the pattern will contain four colors - magenta, yellow, cyan, black. If you are using the BC-20 cartridge, the test pattern will be in black only. If all colors are not visible or the pattern is broken up, the printhead nozzles may be clogged.

If the Nozzle Check pattern printed correctly but printouts from the computer are still poor, verify that your printer properties are set correctly.

  1. Click the Start button on the Windows Taskbar.
  2. Select Settings, and then click Printers.
  3. Click your right mouse button on the BJC-2100 Series icon, and then click Properties on the menu that appears.
  4. Click the Main tab.
  5. Verify that the Print Mode setting matches the type of printing you are attempting.
  6. Verify that the Cartridge Type matches the BJ cartridge that is installed in your printer.
  7. Verify that the Media Type matches the type of paper you are using.

If all colors are not visible, the page is blank or the pattern is broken up on the Nozzle Check pattern, the printhead nozzles may be clogging or the protective tape has not been removed completely from the cartridge.

  1. Open the printer's front cover.
  2. Once the cartridge has moved to the center of the printer, release the cartridge by lifting the locking lever to the right of the cartridge.
  3. Remove the cartridge from the printer and inspect the bottom for the orange protective tape.
  4. If the tape is still on the bottom of the cartridge, remove it.
  5. Place the cartridge back into the printer, press the locking lever back down, and close the cover.
  6. To clean the printhead nozzles from the computer, click the Start button on the Windows Taskbar.
  7. Select Settings, and then click Printers.
  8. Click your right mouse button on the BJC-2100 Series icon, and then click Properties on the menu that appears.
  9. Click the Maintenance tab.
  10. On the Maintenance tab, click the print head cleaning icon in the Print Head Cleaning box.
  11. When a confirmation message appears, click OK.

When the printhead cleaning is completed, print a Nozzle Check Pattern again to confirm that ink is being correctly ejected from the printhead nozzles. You may need to perform up to five printhead cleanings to unclog the nozzles.
If the Nozzle Check pattern still prints incorrectly after cleaning the printhead, it may be time to replace your BJ cartridge or ink tanks.
If you are using a BC-21e cartridge, replace either the BCI-21 black ink tank if black is missing from the Nozzle Check pattern or the BCI-21 color ink tank if any other colors are printing incorrectly.
If you are using a BC-22e or BC-20 cartridge, you must replace the entire cartridge.
After replacing the cartridge or ink tanks, perform at least 2 printhead cleanings then print a Nozzle Check pattern.
If changing the BCI-21 ink tanks and performing printhead cleanings has not restored the print quality, the BC-21e may be worn out. After replacing the entire BC-21e cartridge, perform at least 2 printhead cleanings then print a Nozzle Check pattern.

Q The Cartridge will not return to the home position

A The BJ cartridge is not making proper electrical contact with the carriage. The cartridge may need to be re-seated. Lift the locking lever to unlock the cartridge, remove the cartridge, re-seat it, and lock it in place again. This may take several tries.

Q Unable to communicate with the printer (parallel connection)

A Make sure that there is a direct connection between the printer and computer. Remove any switchboxes, parallel port zip drives, scanners, or other peripherals that are on the LPT port. Reboot the computer. Also ensure that any software for these devices has been removed or disabled. If no print occurs, then try another cable. Check the spool setting under printer properties, Details Tab- select "print directly to the printer".

Q When I try to print through the USB port nothing happens or an error occurs. What can I do to make the printer work?

A

Make sure that there is a direct connection between the printer and USB port of the computer. Reboot the computer with the printer's USB cable unattached and reconnect the cable once the computer has restarted.

Use the following troubleshooting checklist to establish USB communications between the printer and computer:

Ensure your printer is powered on and connected directly to the USB port on the computer.

Ensure that your printer driver is set to the correct port

Click the Details tab at the top of the properties screen.
The port listed in the "Print to the following port dialogue box" should be USBPRN01 BJC2100.
If the printer port is listed correctly and you still receive an error message when attempting to print, the printer driver may be corrupt. Uninstall and then reinstall the printer driver.
If USBPRN01 BJC2100 is not listed or is listed as USBPRN01 Device not connected, check the status of the USB port in the Device Manager.

Ensure the USB port is functioning properly in the Device Manager.

  • You can access the Device Manager by opening Control Panel and then double-clicking on the System icon. Click the Device Manager tab. At the bottom of the device list, click the [+] beside Universal Serial Bus Controller. Under this, you should have a line for a USB Universal Host Controller and another line for a USB Root Hub. If either line does not appear or either line is marked with a red X or yellow (!), you will need to contact your computer manufacturer's technical support to have your USB driver properly configured.
  • If you have an additional entry, such as Unknown Device under Universal Serial Bus Controller, the printer may be showing up this way because the driver was not properly loaded. Highlight Unknown Device and click Remove, then confirm it and restart the computer.

Ensure the printer is showing up in the Device Manager properly.

  • Access the Device Manager by opening Control Panel and then double-clicking on the System icon. Click the Device Manager tab. Locate Universal Serial Bus Controller and click the [+] beside it to expand it.
  • Ensure the BJC-XXXX or SXXX (XXXX being the printer model number, 2100, 3000, etc.) is listed here, along with Universal Host Controller and USB Root Hub. Ensure none of these devices have exclamation points or red X's.
  • The printer may also show up under Other Devices in the Device Manager if the driver did not install correctly. Click the [+] beside Other Devices (if it exists) to expand the category. If you see the printer, highlight it and click Remove, then confirm it and restart the computer.
  • If there is no listing at all for the printer, try reseating the USB cable in the same or different USB port on the computer.
