Q The printer tries to print but either no ink is dispersed or colors are missing from the document, what can I do?

A

If the print quality is poor or no ink is appearing on the page, it may be because of the following problems:

  • The ink in the BJ tanks has run out.
  • The protective cap or tape may have been reattached to the BJ cartridge
  • The print head nozzles in one of the cartridges may be clogged
  • The BJ cartridge may need to be replaced

To check the level of ink in the BJ tanks

Open the printer's front cover and visually check the level of the ink in all the BJ tanks. If a BJ tank is low or has run out of ink, replace it. Failure to do so may shorten the life of your BJ Cartridge.

To remove the protective cap and tape from the BJ cartridge

  1. Open the printer's front cover.
  2. Unlock the BJ cartridge by raising the cartridge lock lever. Make sure you raise it all the way up.
  3. Remove the BJ cartridge by holding it by the left and right sides.
  4. Make sure that the orange protective cap has been removed.
  5. Make sure that the protective tape has also been removed.
  6. Replace the BJ cartridge and move the blue cartridge lock lever until it locks in place.

To check the status of the print heads by printing a Nozzle Check Pattern
The Nozzle Check Pattern confirms whether the inks are being correctly ejected from the print head nozzles and whether the print head on the BJ cartridge is correctly aligned.

  1. On your printer, press and hold the Resume button until the printer light blinks twice. When you release the button, the Nozzle Check Pattern will be printed.
  2. After the Nozzle Check Pattern is printed, check the results.
  3. If any colors are missing or if any horizontal lines are broken or missing, perform the print head cleaning procedure.

To perform the print head cleaning procedure

  1. On your printer, press and hold the Resume button until the printer light flashes one time. When you release the button, all colors will be cleaned. When the print head cleaning begins, the POWER light starts flashing. This will continue for about 30 seconds. Wait for the light to stop flashing before you resume normal operation.
  2. Perform the Nozzle Check Pattern test again.
  3. If the results are satisfactory, resume normal printing.
  4. If the results are not satisfactory, you may need to execute another print head cleaning.

To execute a print head alignment

(Windows)

  1. In Windows, display the Maintenance tab of the printer properties dialog box.
  2. Click the left Test Print button.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screens to perform an automatic print head alignment.
  4. A confirmation screen will ask you if you want to perform automatic print head alignment. Read the screen and click OK.
  5. Another screen warns you not to start any other operation until the alignment is complete. Again, click OK. The BJ Printer Status Monitor displays the Printer Status. The driver will align the print heads.
  6. Perform the Nozzle Check Pattern test again. If the Nozzle Check Pattern is still unsatisfactory, you may need to replace the BJ cartridge.

(Mac)

  1. In the Software application, from the File menu, select Page Setup.
  2. Click the Utilities button.
  3. Click the down-arrow to select Test Print.
  4. Click the Print Head Alignment icon, and then click OK.

  2. Remove the empty BJ tank by pressing in on the release tab and then lifting the BJ tank up and out of its slot.
  3. Dispose of the tank properly, taking care to avoid spilling ink on your hands, floor, furniture, or clothing.

  6. Insert the BJ tank by holding it at a slight angle, aligning it with the correct slot. Press down gently on the top of the tank until it locks into place.

Q Unable to communicate with the printer (parallel connection)

A Make sure that there is a direct connection between the printer and computer. Remove any switchboxes, parallel port zip drives, scanners, or other peripherals that are on the LPT port. Reboot the computer. Also ensure that any software for these devices are removed or disabled. If no print occurs, then try another cable. Check the spool setting under printer properties, Details Tab- select "print directly to the printer".

Q Unable to communicate with the printer (USB connection)

A

Make sure that there is a direct connection between the printer and USB port of the computer. Reboot the computer with the printer's USB cable unattached and reconnect the cable once the computer has restarted.

Use the following troubleshooting checklist to establish USB communications between the printer and computer:

Ensure your printer is powered on and connected directly to the USB port on the computer.

Ensure the USB port is functioning properly in the Device Manager.

  • You can access the Device Manager by opening Control Panel and then double-clicking on the System icon. Click the Device Manager tab. At the bottom of the device list, click the [+] beside Universal Serial Bus Controller. Under this, you should have a line for a USB Universal Host Controller and another line for a USB Root Hub. If either line does not appear or either line is marked with a red X or yellow (!), you will need to contact your computer manufacturer's technical support to have your USB driver properly configured.
  • If you have an additional entry, such as Unknown Device under Universal Serial Bus Controller, the printer may be showing up this way because the driver was not properly loaded. Highlight Unknown Device and click Remove, then confirm it and restart the computer.

Ensure the printer is showing up in the Device Manager properly.

  • Access the Device Manager by opening Control Panel and then double-clicking on the System icon. Click the Device Manager tab. Locate Universal Serial Bus Controller and click the [+] beside it to expand it.
  • Ensure the BJC-XXXX or SXXX (XXXX being the printer model number, 2100, 3000, etc.) is listed here, along with Universal Host Controller and USB Root Hub. Ensure none of these devices have exclamation points or red X's.
  • The printer may also show up under Other Devices in the Device Manager if the driver did not install correctly. Click the [+] beside Other Devices (if it exists) to expand the category. If you see the printer, highlight it and click Remove, then confirm it and restart the computer.
  • If there is no listing at all for the printer, try reseating the USB cable in the same or different USB port on the computer.
