Before installing the Canon Windows driver, make sure your computer system has the following minimum configuration:
386sx personal computer
4 MB of free random access memory (RAM)
6 MB of available hard disk space
VGA color graphics monitor with a minimum resolution of 640x480
MS-DOS 5.0 or later
Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher
Centronics-compatible Parallel Printer Cable
You can run Microsoft Windows and use the Color Advisor with 4MB of RAM. However, for optimum performance, Canon recommends that your computer have 8 MB of RAM. Microsoft Windows and other applications use 4MB of RAM; to speed its performance, the Color Advisor needs an additional 4MB of RAM.
Your operating system environment and applications may have different requirements.
How do I attach the printer to the computer?
After removing the packaging tape from the various locations on the printer, turn the printer around and attach the AC adapter to the connection on the lower right corner. Next attach your Centronics-compatible Parallel Printer Cable to the connection on the upper right corner. Connect the other end of the printer cable to the computer's parallel port. Plug the AC adapter into an open wall outlet.
NOTE: For reliable data communications between your computer and the printer, use a short cable, six feet or less in length.
How do I install the cartridge?
Make sure the Centronics-compatible, parallel interface cable and the power cord are attached.
Press the POWER button. The POWER light comes on. When you turn on the printer for the first time, the BJ cartridge holder moves to the center of the printer so you can install the BJ cartridge.
Open the front cover by pulling both sides of the cover forward with both hands. See Diagram 3-1.
Diagram 3-1
When installing the cartridge, avoid touching the circuit board and the film cable.
Lift the green lock lever on the cartridge holder.
Only unwrap the ink cartridge you plan to use. If you unwrap both ink cartridges, install one in the printer and store the other one in the BJ cartridge container. Take the ink cartridge you are installing in the printer out of its protective packaging. Peel off the protective foil.
Lift off the orange cap from the print head and then remove the orange tape.
Slide the BJ cartridge straight into the cartridge holder until the cartridge is pressed against the back of the holder. Be careful not to touch the rollers with the print head.
Press the green lock lever down completely, so that the marks on the lever and the cartridge holder align. The BJ cartridge is now positioned and locked. NOTE: Do not move the mechanism that houses the BJ cartridge. Attempting to move the BJ cartridge holder will damage the printer.
Set the paper thickness lever.
If you installed the BC-20 Black BJ cartridge, set the paper thickness lever to the left.
If you installed the BC-21 Color BJ cartridge, set the paper thickness lever to the center.
Press the CARTRIDGE button for a few seconds until you hear two beeps. The cartridge holder moves to the right side of the printer. This is called the home position.
If the BJ cartridge is not installed or the lock lever is not completely down, the printer beeps three times and the cartridge holder does not move.
Close the front cover.

During the driver installation I get an error message that says "Unable to update driver, driver is currently being used by Windows." How can I get around this error?
Windows uses the file(s) ctl3d.dll and/or ctl3dv2.dll. These files are located in the Windows\System directory. During driver installation, the BJC-4100 is trying to load this file(s) as well and therefore causes the error. The solution to this problem is to (1) Exit Windows (2) rename the file(s) ctl3d.dll to ctl3d.old and ctl3dv2.dll to ctl3dv2.old. Restart Windows. Then load driver.
What do I do if the printer will not power on?
Make sure the AC adapter is connected securely into the printer and into a wall outlet. If the printer still does not respond try plugging the printer into another wall outlet. Be sure that the wall outlet you are using has power. If the problem still persists, contact Canon Technical Support for Service Options.
Why does the cartridge move but the ink does not print?
Check to see if the orange shipping tape has been removed from the bottom of the ink cartridge (See Installing the Cartridge above). Perform the Print Head Cleaning procedure (see below). If print head cleanings do not fix the
problem, your BJ cartridge may be out of ink. Replace the cartridge and try
printing again.
Cleaning the Print Head
Your printer is equipped with a print head cleaning function to ensure constant high quality printing. If you are using Windows, you can execute print head cleanings from the Control sheet in the printer driver. How do I improve the print speed?
Improving Speed in Windows 3.1
Turn off the Print Manager in the Windows Control Panel. This avoids the extra step of sending the print file to the Print Manager and may increase your printing speed by as much as 25%, depending on the computer you are using.
Add a permanent swap file in Windows 3.1 Under the 386 Enhanced icon in the Windows Control Panel, add or create a permanent swap file that is from 4 MB to 9 MB in size. The computer will be able to prepare the print file faster. See your Windows documentation for instructions.
Free up your memory. Use only one software program at a time and unload any screen saving utilities or programs stored in Windows background; this frees up more memory for Windows processing.
Limit the number of colors on each page. The computer will need to calculate and transmit fewer dots. Too many colors can make the image confusing and less effective as well as cause the print speed to slow down.
Use primary colors when printing presentation graphics. Use black, cyan, yellow, magenta, blue, green, and red when possible. The computer will need to calculate and transfer fewer dots.
Use high-speed (draft) modes. The printer will need to image fewer dots.
Use plain paper mode. The print head will make only one pass for each printed line.
Use smaller graphics and more white space in your documents. The computer will be able to prepare the print file faster.
Avoid solid colors; use hatch patterns or tints instead. The computer will need to calculate and transmit fewer dots.
Add RAM to your computer. The computer will be able to prepare the print file faster.
Use a computer with a faster processor. The computer will be able to prepare the print file faster.
Use Monochrome when possible. If you will be printing text in black ink only, choose Monochrome rather than Grayscale. Print draft documents in Monochrome rather than Color, or use Draft mode when printing color.
How do I use Color Advisor?
The Canon Color Advisor is a tool that is automatically installed with the Canon BJC-4100 printer driver for Windows 3.1. This tool is Canon's exclusive software that colors documents automatically even when your software does not support color. When your software application does support color, Color Advisor expands the range of colors you can use within the software. Color Advisor allows you to supply a color background to a document, apply special effects to your text (such as drop shadows), and apply the best choice of colors based on criteria that you specify. Color Advisor allows you to save time and money by previewing your document in color before you print.
I am getting Out of Memory errors.
Try the following steps:
Shut down all other programs running except the one you are printing from.
Ensure the BJC-4100 is set as the default printer.
Turn off Print Manager.
Verify a proper SET TEMP statement, the drive that contains the SET TEMP directory may not have enough available space. This can be done from the DOS command prompt, by typing SET. Find the "TEMP=" statement. Examples are TEMP=C:\DOS or TEMP=C:\WINDOWS.
Reduce the printer resolution (from 720 x 360 to 360 to 360) by selecting the standard or draft mode.
If printing a multiple page document, print only 1-2 pages at a time.
Lower the video resolution to 680 x 480.
Color image does not match screen.
Be sure to set the driver for Match under Custom options. Perform the Print Head Cleaning procedure (see above). If print head cleanings do not fix the problem, your BJ cartridge may be out of ink. Replace the cartridge and try printing again.
How do I replace the print cartridges?
The following procedure describes how to replace either the BC-20 Black BJ cartridge or the BC-21 Color BJ cartridge. Follow the instructions in this topic to replace an old BJ cartridge or to change cartridges when you want to switch from high-speed monochrome printing to color printing (or vice-versa).
You only need to replace the BC-21 Color BJ cartridge when the print head is damaged (or after approximately 2,000 pages). If one of the ink tanks (either color or black) in your BC-21 Color BJ cartridge is out of ink, see Installing the cartridge above for instructions on how to replace an ink tank.
After installing the cartridge and pressing the button, I hear 3 beeps and the cartridge stays in the middle.
Three audible beeps will sound if the cartridge is seated incorrectly. Remove and reseat the cartridge to fix the problem. See "How do I install the cartridge?" above for detailed instructions about installing your cartridge.
What do I do if the printer will not power on?
Make sure the AC adapter is connected securely into the printer and into a wall outlet. If the printer still does not respond, try the printer in another wall outlet. Be sure that the wall outlet you are using has power. If the problem still persists, call Technical Support for Service Options.
Why does the cartridge move but the ink does not print?
Check to see if the orange shipping tape has been removed from the bottom of the ink cartridge. Perform the Print Head Cleaning procedure. If print head cleanings do not fix the problem, your BJ cartridge may be out of ink. Replace the cartridge and try printing again.
Why is my printer printing garbage or extra characters?
The first step is to ensure the BJC-4100 is selected as the default printer. There may be print jobs queued up in Print Manager. Delete any pending print jobs, and attempt to print again. If the problem persists, then disable Print Manager.
If you would like to use Print Manager, make sure you have enough space left on your hard drive, and you have a valid SET TEMP statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
There may be a communication problem between the printer and your computer. Check to see if your Centronics-compatible Parallel Printer Cable is securely connected to the PC and the printer. If the cable is secure refer to the questions above.
Why am I missing colors on the self test?
Check to see if the orange shipping tape has been removed from the bottom of the ink cartridge. Perform the Print Head Cleaning procedure. If print head cleanings do not fix the problem, your BJ cartridge may be out of ink. Replace the cartridge and try printing again.
Why don't I have communication with the printer?
There are several reasons why you don't have any communication with your BJC-4100. Check the following:
Be sure that Printer Cable is properly connected.
Be sure that your printer is turned on, the online light is on, and has paper in it.
Be sure that you have properly installed the printer driver that came with your printer.
If after following the above steps you still don't have communication with your printer try the following:
Try printing from DOS. Exit Windows. At the DOS prompt, type DIR>PRN. You should get an immediate reaction from your printer. If you do not, go on to step 2.
Ensure your printer is securely attached, and that it is the only device attached to the parallel port.
Try installing an emulation driver. If you can print with the emulation driver then you need to delete and reinstall the driver that came with your printer.
If the above does not work then most likely you have a problem with your Centronics-compatible Parallel Printer Cable. Replace your printer
cable.
