Q What do I do if I get an "Unable to Read" error?

A This error message may be encountered when using the Canon Creative CD to install the latest printer driver or when installing Canon Creative software.

If the error occurs, check the CD for fingerprints, smudges, or dust. If you need to clean the CD, use lukewarm water and a soft cotton cloth. Dry in a straight motion, wiping from inside edge to outside edge. Do not use a circular motion when wiping the CD as this may cause damage to the CD.

Attempt to install again:

Place CD#1 in the CD-ROM drive, and try the installation again by following these steps:

Windows 95
  1. Click on Start, Run and type D:\SETUP and click on OK
  2. Follow the prompts for installation.

Windows 3.1

  1. Click on File, Run and type D:\SETUP and click on OK
  2. Follow the prompts for installation.

Windows 3.1:

  1. The CD information to edit is located in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  2. Click on File, Run and type SYSEDIT and click on OK.
  3. On the AUTOEXEC.BAT notepad window, locate the MSCDEX line
  4. Document the type of CD-ROM Driver that is being used. This information is found in the MSCDEX line , i.e. /D:SONY_OAK.
  5. Change /M:xx to /M:5. If /M:xx is not there, add /M:5
  6. Save the AUTOEXEC.BAT, exit SYSEDIT, exit Windows and power off the system.
  7. Turn the system on and try installing Canon Creative applications.

Install Programs Manually:

If the main Setup continues to display to "Unable to Read" error message, try installing the applications individually using Windows™ Explorer or File Manager.

Q Why won't my printer print from Windows 95?

A The solution to this problem varies depending on whether the printer attempts to print but no ink appears on the page or the computer produces an error message related to the operation of the printer. See below for details on each situation.

Printer acts like it is printing but no ink is dispersed

The cause of this problem varies depending on whether the cartridge is brand new, or the cartridge has been used for some time.

Cartridge is brand new:

Try removing the cartridge from the printer, turn it upside down, and look at the bottom of the cartridge, where the nozzles are located. Make sure there are no impediments such as an orange protection tab that ships with all new BJC-240 compatible cartridges, or perhaps glue residues left behind from the orange protection tab.

Re-install the cartridge in the printer and perform a print head cleaning to re-initialize ink flow.

To perform a print head cleaning through Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 (assuming the printer is connected properly and you are using the BJC-240 Windows driver that came with the printer):

Windows 95

  1. Click on Start
  2. Choose Settings
  3. Click on Printers
  4. Right-click on Canon printer icon
  5. Select Properties
  6. Click on the Control tab
  7. Select Clean Ink Head (After the cleaning cycle is complete, try printing a nozzle test to do this)
  8. Select Nozzle Test
  9. Select Print
  10. If it does not print a nozzle test perform steps 7 - 9 again.

Windows 3.1

  1. Double-click on the "Main" program group
  2. Double-click on the "Control Panel" icon
  3. Double-click on the "Printer" icon
  4. Click on the Setup Button
  5. Click on the Control tab
  6. Select Clean Ink Head (After the cleaning cycle is complete, try printing a nozzle test.)
  7. Select Nozzle Test
  8. Select Print
  9. If it does not print a nozzle test perform steps 6 - 8 again.

If you are not operating the printer from the Windows environment, perform this operation with the printer on:

Press and hold down the RESUME button on the front panel of the printer until the printer beeps twice. This will begin the cleaning process. Let the printer run its cleaning procedure. Repeat the operation two or three more times.

Cartridge has been used for some time:

It is possible that the cartridge no longer contains liquid ink. To determine this, try performing a "Nozzle Test" from the printer driver screen named "Control".

Windows 95:

  1. Start
  2. Settings
  3. Printers
  4. Right-click on Canon printer icon
  5. Select Properties
  6. Control
  7. Nozzle Test
  8. Print

Windows 3.x:

  1. Main
  2. Control Panel
  3. Main
  4. Printers
  5. Highlight Canon BJC-240
  6. Setup
  7. Control
  8. Nozzle Test
  9. Print

If the nozzle test does not produce all three color patterns (blue, red, and yellow), perform one or two print head cleanings and retry the nozzle test pattern. If this operation continues to fail, the cartridge may need to be replaced.

If you unwrap a BJ cartridge but do not have it installed in the printer, store it in the BJ cartridge container to prevent the print head from drying and clogging. This will extend the life of opened cartridges. Cartridges (print heads) that are installed in the printer are capped at power off or during periods of inactivity to prevent drying.

Error Message

    PrinterMicrosoftLPT Printer with bidirect communicationLPTWDL&NBSP;
    PrinterMicrosoftLPT Printer with bidirect communicationLPTWDL&NBSP;
    PrinterMicrosoftLPT Printer with bidirect communicationLPTWDL&NBSP;
  9. A file A5318.EXE should appear, download this file.
  10. The driver A5318.exe contains the following files:
    x86
    Date
    Size
    Version
    prnt5upd.exe12/3/961633924.71.121.0&NBSP;
    readme.txt12/3/961079&NBSP;

Decompress the file, and execute PRNT5UPD.EXE (see the instructions below).

To install this driver, follow these steps:

  1. Create a blank formatted 3.5"/1.44MB diskette.
  2. Download the driver to the diskette by clicking the driver hot link at the top of this page, and from "My Computer" or "Windows 95™ Explorer," double-click the file you downloaded - this will extract the driver.
  3. Launch Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the Add New Hardware icon. At the prompt "Do you want Windows to Search for new hardware?" click No.
  5. Click the hardware type for the driver you are installing.
  6. Click the Have Disk button.
  7. Enter the location of the driver file.
  8. Follow the instructions on your screen.

To upgrade an existing driver with this driver, follow these steps:

  1. Create a blank formatted 3.5"/1.44MB diskette.
  2. Download the driver to the diskette by clicking the driver hot link at the top of this page, and from "My Computer" or "Windows 95™ Explorer," double-click the file you downloaded - this will extract the driver.
  3. Use the right mouse button to click My Computer, then click properties on the menu that appears.
  4. Click the Device Manager tab, then double-click the device type and the device you want to upgrade.
  5. Click the Driver tab, then click the change Driver button.
  6. Click the Have Disk button.
  7. Enter the location of the driver file.
  8. Follow the instructions on your screen.

The second solution is to change the configuration of the parallel port.

To bypass this problem, in Windows 95:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Double-click on Control Panel.
  4. Double-click on System.
  5. Click on Device Manager.
  6. Double-click on Ports.
  7. Double-click on LPT1 printer port (or the printer port to which the printer is connected).
  8. Click on Resources.

At this point, the printer port settings should be set to:

Input-Output Range: 0378-037x (where x stands for "any letter")
Input-Output Range: 0778-077x (you may or may not see this parameter)
Interrupt Request: 7
Direct Memory Access: 0 (or none).

If you see any different settings, then you have isolated the cause of the problem.

To change settings:

  1. Eliminate the check mark from "Use Automatic Settings."
  2. Under "Basic Configuration" toggle between the available options until you find one that produces the above parameters.
  3. Select it, click on OK.
  4. Shut down Windows 95™.
  5. Restart Windows 95™.

If none of the available "Basic Configuration" options matches the specified parameters, try selecting the one with the highest value, click on OK, and restart your computer. Try this procedure again, you may have different options available after you restart.

On a Compaq Presario, once back in Windows 95, return to the same screen following the steps provided above, and you will now find additional options under "Basic Configuration", one of which will give you the necessary parameters. Usually, on a Presario "4xxx" or "6xxx" series, the "Basic Configuration" should be set to 0004. On most other models, it should be set to 0003.

On a non-Compaq computer, if even after restarting Windows 95 you do not find new options to choose from under "Basic Configuration," you will have to enter the computer BIOS settings as per instruction on your computer manual, and find a choice for the corresponding parallel printer port that uses no DMA (you may have to set your printer port to "Standard" in order to set up the necessary parameters). After the appropriate parameters have been selected, exit the computer BIOS saving the changes you have made, re-enter Windows 95 and set your LPT1 (or the printer port to which the printer is connected) Basic Configuration to the option that matches the parameters given above following the indications given above.

Q How do I improve print speed?

A

When trying to increase print speed please follow these suggestions. The exact procedure depends on the operating system that your computer is using. Click here if you are using Windows 3.x, or Windows 95.

Windows 3.x

  1. For quicker color printing with the BJC Series Windows printer driver, choose the following settings:
    • Media Type - Plain Paper
    • Print Quality - Standard; Fine is off Color Model- Color
    • Print Model - Custom (Select Options) Color Selection- Fast Color
  2. Also, you can try disabling Print Manager. Go to Main / Control Panel / Printers, and disable "Use Print Manager."
  3. If you are printing a monochrome document, make sure the printer driver is set to "Monochrome." Processing a monochrome document with the "Color" feature enabled will require much more processing power.

Windows 95

  1. For quicker color printing with the BJC Series Windows printer driver, choose the following settings:
    • Media Type - Plain Paper
    • Print Quality - Standard; Fine is off Color Model - Color
    • Print Model - Custom (Select Options) Color Selection - Fast Color
  2. Also, you can try disabling Print Spooler. Go to the printer properties, and from "Detail" choose "Spool Settings," and enable "Print directly to printer."

Q Why doesn't the printed image match the screen image?

A

A wide variety of factors can affect the matched color output of the printer.

Make sure that Image Color Matching is selected in the printer driver.

  1. Click on Start.
  2. Settings.
  3. Click on Printers.
  4. Right click on your printer.
  5. Click on the Properties option.
  6. Click on the Graphics tab.
  7. Click on the Check Mark on the Image Color Matching option. If the Check Mark looks depressed, Image Color Matching is enabled.

The Image Color Matching selection is designed to closely match the screen plus attempt to distinguish subtle color differences.

Keep in mind that a perfect match to screen colors is not always possible due to the difference in color technology of monitor and printer output, as well as to such variables as the amount of light in the room where the monitor is located.

Performing a printer self test to ensure that the printer is printing properly.

Windows 95:

  1. Click on Start
  2. Settings
  3. Click on Printers
  4. Right click on your printer
  5. Choose the Properties option
  6. Click on the Control tab
  7. Choose the Demonstration test
  8. Click on Print

Windows 3.x&:

  1. Double-click on the Main Program Group
  2. Double-click on the Control Panel icon
  3. Double-click on the Printer icon
  4. Click on the Setup button
  5. Click on the Control tab
  6. Choose the Demonstration test
  7. Click on Print

From the Printers Operator Panel

  1. Starting with the printer powered off
  2. Hold down the POWER button until the printer beeps once, then release it.

If colors are missing on the self test, then the printed colors are not matching those on the screen because not all color inks are available. To re-establish the correct ink flow you can try performing print head cleaning.

Also, you can try changing your computer display driver to VGA and print again. The printer driver, in fact, draws its information directly from the display driver. If this resolves the situation, then the solution to the color matching problem could be as easy as upgrading the display driver (please refer to your computer manufacturer for exact procedure). Please note - the VGA driver will only yield 16 primary colors. Other drivers may be required for 256 colors or 16-bit or 24-bit color.

Lastly, the quality of the printed output is strictly dependent on the software application from which the print job is generated. Try importing the graphics you are attempting to print into a strong graphic software program such as CorelDraw or similar software that you may already have, and see if this improves the quality of the output.

Q Why is my printer putting out extra characters (garbage)?

A

The answer to this question may be found in a wide variety of factors. In general, it is a good idea to remove and re-install the printer driver with the diskettes that shipped with the printer. Also, make sure the printer is connected directly to the parallel printer port on back of the computer, and it does not pass through another parallel device such as a parallel drive, scanner or an A/B printer switch.

If you have not yet been able to correct the problem with the suggestions indicated above, then the next steps differ according to the version of Windows loaded on your computer.

Windows 95:

Make sure the BJC-4200 is set as the default printer.

  1. Go to Start.
  2. Settings.
  3. Double-click on Printers.
  4. Right-click on the BJC-4200.
  5. At this point a check mark should appear next to "Set as default." If no check mark is visible, click on "Set as default" in order to select it.

Next, try printing from DOS.

  1. Go to Start.
  2. Shut Down.
  3. Restart computer in MS-DOS mode.
  4. At the C:>\windows, type: cd\ and press ENTER.
  5. At the C:> type: dir > prn and press ENTER.

If the printer prints the root directory of your hard drive correctly, then both the computer printer port and the printer cable have a good chance of being operable, and the problem is likely with the software configuration in Windows 95.

This problem occurs when the printer port settings on the computer are set to parameters that are incompatible with some Canon Bubble Jet printers.

To bypass this problem, in Windows 95 you need change the Windows 95 configuration (see fourth question above).

Also, to rule out printer driver conflicts, you can try using an emulation printer driver for your printer such as the Canon BJC-4000 mini-driver (you will be able to find that driver in the list of supported printers under Windows™), in place of the original Canon driver. Be sure to set it as the "default" printer.

If, on the other hand, the printer did not print from DOS, or if it still prints garbled characters after attempting all the suggestions indicated above, then you should try replacing the printer cable and, ultimately, the printer port in the back of the computer.

Windows 3.x:

Try printing from DOS.

  1. In Program Manager.
  2. Go to File.
  3. Exit Windows.
  4. Click on Yes.
  5. At the C:> type: dir > prn and press ENTER.
  6. If the printer prints the root directory of your hard drive correctly, then both the computer printer port and the printer cable have good chances of being fine, and the problem is likely to be found with an erroneous or corrupted software configuration in Windows™.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Open the Main Program Group.
  9. Double-click on Control Panel.
  10. Double-click on Printers.
  11. Disable Print Manager by clicking on the appropriate box (bottom left corner).
  12. Lastly, click on Connect.
  13. Choose LPT1.DOS in the list of available ports.
  14. Click on OK.
  15. Click on Close.

Note: Vice-versa, if the selected port was LPT1.DOS, choose LPT1, click on OK, and then on Close.

If, on the other hand, the printer did not print from DOS, or if it still prints garbled characters after attempting all the suggestions indicated above, then you should try replacing the printer cable and, ultimately the printer port in the back of the computer.

If a print job has been interrupted for any reason, the printer may be out of synch with the data coming from the computer. The classic example is a paper jam that has interrupted the print job. The print job will need to be purged from the print spooler.

Windows 95B>

  1. Click on Start.
  2. Settings.
  3. Click on Printers.
  4. Double-click on your printer.
  5. Click on Printer.v
  6. Click on Purge Print Jobs.

Windows 3.x:

  1. Double-click on the Main Program Group.
  2. Double-click on the Print Manager icon.
  3. You will see your print jobs listed below your printer. Highlight and delete each print job.

Q Why does only 3/4 of a page print out?

A

The solution to this problem varies depending on the brand and model of computer to which the printer is attached. Click here for a description of the steps that should be taken to correct a partial page print problem on most computers. Please click here if you are using a Toshiba notebook computer.

Toshiba Notebook

This problem occurs when the printer port settings on the computer are set to parameters that are incompatible with some Canon Bubble Jet printers.

To resolve the partial page printout problem on a Toshiba notebook computer, please follow these steps:

In Windows 95:

  1. Click on Start.
  2. Programs.
  3. Go to Toshiba Utilities.
  4. Then to HWSETUP (or TSETUP).
  5. Select Hardware Options.
  6. Select Parallel/Printer.
  7. Select Standard Bi-directional.
  8. SAVE AND REBOOT THE SYSTEM.

If this still does not resolve the partial printout problem, then you should replace the LPT.VXD file that is currently installed in the windows\system subdirectory with a different version of the same file. You may download the file in question from Windows Driver Downloads, under "Bubble Jet Software for Win95." The file is called LPT.EXE, for it is compressed. After downloading and decompressing the file by double-clicking on it, the resulting LPT.VXD will have to be placed in the windows\system subdirectory, thus replacing the same file already present in that location. Once you have done so, reboot the computer.

If the problem persists, it is recommended that you contact Toshiba Technical Support, for a computer flash BIOS update may be required in order to resolve the incompatibility.
