I got the error message, "cannot find printer BJC-4550 error number D300 or other"; what do I do?
A possible solution to error D300 is to slow down the Serial Port speed. To perform this task, please follow the steps below:
For Quickdraw:
Click on the Apple Menu.
Click on Chooser.
Select the 4550 icon.
click Setup.
Set Serial Transfer Speed to 57kbps.
For QuickDraw GX:
Double-click 4550 icon on desktop.
Click on the Printing Menu.
Click on the Serial Transfer Speed setup option.
Set Serial Transfer Speed to 57kbps.
It may be necessary to shut down and restart the Macintosh as well as power the printer off and on to clear the message.
If the above procedure does not resolve the problem, then please try these other suggestions:
Try booting with Extensions Off (Shift Key held while booting) to make sure there are no Extension conflicts.
Is the Printer connected with a standard serial cable and not an AppleTalk connector?
If you have attached an AppleTalk connector to the serial port on the printer, the printer will not be detected. This printer MUST be attached with a Serial cable and not an AppleTalk connector.
Is AppleTalk disabled? In some cases, having AppleTalk active may cause the printer port to be busy. For troubleshooting purposes, disable AppleTalk.
If you are planning to "share" the printer over AppleTalk, then it is recommended to attach the printer to the MODEM port using a serial cable and then configure the BJC-4550 as shared. Refer to Appendix B in the BJC-4550 manual for illustrations and setup.
Is/Was a PC attached to the parallel port? In some cases if a PC is attached to the parallel port and the PC is powered off, it may cause a communications error on the serial interface. For troubleshooting purposes, make sure the PC is powered on, or disconnect the parallel cable.
If, after trying these suggestions, the error continues to occur, please contact the Canon Customer Care Center for assistance.
Does Canon have Windows NT drivers available?
Although Canon does not currently support its Bubble Jet printers in Windows NT, drivers for some Canon printers are provided by Microsoft along with the same operating system. For the BJC-4550 printer, Canon suggests using the BJC-800/820 driver available in the list of supported printers because is supports 11" x 17" inch paper. Availability and support of Canon-developed drivers for Windows NT for Bubble Jet printers has not yet been announced.
How do I install the Macintosh drivers?
Insert BJC-4550 Printer Software for Macintosh Disk 1 into the disk drive.
Double-click the Disk 1 icon to display the contents of the disk (this step may occur automatically).
Double-click the Installer icon to open the Installer.
Click the Easy Install tab if it is not already selected.
Click the Install button to begin installation. Change disks when prompted.
Click the Restart button when a message appears informing you that installation is complete.
After the system restarts, a printer must be chosen using the Chooser.
If problems occur while installing the driver, try bypassing the extensions by holding down the shift key when you re-start. After re-starting without extensions, repeat above steps.
Why does the printer act like it is printing but no ink is dispersed?
The cause of this problem varies depending on whether the cartridge is brand new, or the cartridge has been used for some time.
Cartridge is brand new:
Try removing the cartridge from the printer, turn it upside down, and look at the bottom of the cartridge, where the nozzles are located. Make sure there are no impediments such as an orange protection tab that ships with all new BJC-4550 compatible cartridges, or perhaps glue residues left behind from the orange protection tab.
Re-install the cartridge in the printer, perform a print head cleanings to re-initialize ink flow.
To perform a print head cleaning through Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 (assuming the printer is connected properly and you are using the BJC-4550 Windows driver that came with the printer):
Windows 95
Click on Start
Choose Settings
Click on Printers
Right-click on Canon printer icon
Select Properties
Click on the Control tab
Select Clean Ink Head (After the cleaning cycle is complete, try printing a nozzle test to do this)
Select Nozzle Test
Select Print
If it does not print a nozzle test perform steps 7 - 9 again.
Windows 3.1
Double-click on the "Main" program group
Double-click on the "Control Panel" icon
Double-click on the "Printer" icon
Click on the Setup Button
Click on the Control tab
Select Clean Ink Head (After the cleaning cycle is complete, try printing a nozzle test.)
Select Nozzle Test
Select Print
If it does not print a nozzle test perform steps 6 - 8 again.
If you are not operating the printer from the Windows environment, perform this operation with the printer on:
Press and hold down the RESUME button on the front panel of the printer until the printer beeps twice. This will begin the cleaning process. Let the printer run its cleaning procedure. Repeat the operation two or three more times.
Cartridge has been used for some time:
It is possible that the cartridge no longer contains liquid ink. To determine this, try performing a "Nozzle Test" from the printer driver screen named "Control".
Windows 95

Right-click on Canon printer icon
Select Properties
Control
Nozzle Test
Print
Windows 3.x
Main
Control Panel

If the nozzle test does not produce all three color patterns (blue, red, and yellow), perform one or two print head cleanings and retry the nozzle test pattern. If this operation continues to fail, the cartridge may need to be replaced.
If you unwrap a BJ cartridge but do not have it installed in the printer, store it in the BJ cartridge container to prevent the print head from drying and clogging. This will extend the life of opened cartridges. Cartridges (print heads) that are installed in the printer are capped at power off or during periods of inactivity to prevent drying.
What are the factors that affect print speed?
When trying to increase print speed please follow these suggestions. The exact procedure depends on the operating system that your computer is using. Click here if you are using Windows 3.x, Windows 95 or Macintosh.
Windows 3.x
For quicker color printing with the BJC Series Windows printer driver, choose the following settings:
Media Type: Plain Paper
Print Quality: Standard; Fine is off Color Model - Color
Print Model: Custom (Select Options) Color Selection - Fast Color
Also, you can try disabling Print Manager. Go to Main / Control Panel / Printers, and disable "Use Print Manager."
If you are printing a monochrome document, make sure the printer driver is set to "Monochrome." Processing a monochrome document with the "Color" feature enabled will require much more processing power.
Windows 95
For quicker color printing with the BJC Series Windowsm printer driver, choose the following settings:
Media Type: Plain Paper
Print Quality: Standard; Fine is off Color Model - Color
Print Model: Custom (Select Options) Color Selection - Fast Color
Also, you can try disabling Print Spooler. Go to the printer properties, and from "Detail" choose "Spool Settings," and enable "Print directly to printer."
If you are printing a monochrome document, make sure the printer driver is set to "Monochrome." Processing a monochrome document with the "Color" feature enabled will require much more processing power.
Macintosh
Performance is directly proportional to the speed of the computer system. Please note that minimum system requirements are as follows:
Power Mac (601, 603, 603e, 604, 604e) or Mac with 68020 (68030, 68040) or better, System 7.1 or later, ColorSync 1.0.5 or later. (Currently, System 7.6 is the latest System software.) The System software can be determined from the Finder-Apple-About this Macintosh menu.
Clearly, the closer your computer system is to (but still above) the minimum requirements, the slower the printer will be in its output.
Why doesn't the printed output match the screen image?
A wide variety of factors can affect the matched color output of the printer.
Make sure that Image Color Matching is selected in the printer driver.
Click on Start.
Settings.
Click on Printers.
Right click on your printer.
Click on the Properties option.
Click on the Graphics tab.
Click on the Check Mark on the Image Color Matching option. If the Check Mark looks depressed, Image Color Matching is enabled.
The Image Color Matching selection is designed to closely match the screen plus attempt to distinguish subtle color differences.
Keep in mind that a perfect match to screen colors is not always possible due to the difference in color technology of monitor and printer output, as well as to such variables as the amount of light in the room where the monitor is located.
Performing a printer self test to ensure that the printer is printing properly.
Windows 95
Click on Start
Settings
Click on Printers
Right click on your printer
Choose the Properties option
Click on the Control tab
Choose the Demonstration test
Click on Print
Windows 3.x
Double-click on the Main Program Group
Double-click on the Control Panel icon
Double-click on the Printer icon
Click on the Setup button
Click on the Control tab
Choose the Demonstration test
Click on Print
From the Printers Operator Panel
Starting with the printer powered off
Hold down the POWER button until the printer beeps once, then release it.
If colors are missing on the self test, then the printed colors are not matching those on the screen because not all color inks are available. To re-establish the correct ink flow you can try performing print head cleaning.
Also, you can try changing your computer display driver to VGA and print again. The printer driver, in fact, draws its information directly from the display driver. If this resolves the situation, then the solution to the color matching problem could be as easy as upgrading the display driver (please refer to your computer manufacturer for exact procedure). Please note - the VGA driver will only yield 16 primary colors. Other drivers may be required for 256 colors or 16-bit or 24-bit color.
Lastly, the quality of the printed output is strictly dependent on the software application from which the print job is generated. Try importing the graphics you are attempting to print into a strong graphic software program such as CorelDraw or similar software that you may already have, and see if this improves the quality of the output.
Macintosh
The Macintosh environment has a color matching standard called Color Synch. Check your system and your applications to ensure this is active.
Color Synch needs to be enabled in the operating system.
Click on the Apple.
Select Extensions Manager.
Look for a Check Mark next to Color Synch.
If one does not exist, check the option, shut down and reboot the system.
If one does exist, move on to enabling Color Synch.
Enabling Color Synch
Click on the Apple.
Select Control Panels.
Select Color Synch.
Set Profile.
Select the BJ Standard profile.
Click Select.
Close the dialog box.
Color Synch is now enabled. It is possible that you will need to make some adjustments in your applications. Please refer to your software manual or manufacturer for assistance.
Why does only 3/4 of a page print out?
The solution to this problem varies depending on the brand and model of computer to which the printer is attached. Click here for a description of the steps that should be taken to correct a partial page print problem on most computers.
Toshiba Notebook
This problem occurs when the printer port settings on the computer are set to parameters that are incompatible with some Canon Bubble Jet printers.
To resolve the partial page printout problem on a Toshiba notebook computer, please follow these steps:
In Windows 95:
Click on Start.
Programs.
Go to Toshiba Utilities.
Then to HWSETUP (or TSETUP).
Select Hardware Options.
Select Parallel/Printer.
Select Standard Bi-directional.
SAVE AND REBOOT THE SYSTEM.
If this still does not resolve the partial printout problem, then you should replace the LPT.VXD file that is currently installed in the windows\system subdirectory with a different version of the same file. You may download the file in question from Windows Driver Downloads (above), under "Bubble Jet Software for Win95." The file is called LPT.EXE, for it is compressed. After downloading and decompressing the file by double-clicking on it, the resulting LPT.VXD will have to be placed in the windows\system subdirectory, thus replacing the same file already present in that location. Once you have done so, reboot the computer.
If the problem persists, it is recommended that you contact Toshiba Technical Support, for a computer flash BIOS update may be required in order to resolve the incompatibility.
What do I do if I get an "Unable to Read" error message?
This error message may be encountered when using the Canon Creative CD to install the latest printer driver or when installing Canon Creative software.
If the error occurs, check the CD for fingerprints, smudges, or dust. If you need to clean the CD, use lukewarm water and a soft cotton cloth. Dry in a straight motion, wiping from inside edge to outside edge. Do not use a circular motion when wiping the CD as this may cause damage to the CD.
Attempt to install again:
Place CD#1 in the CD-ROM drive, and try the installation again by following these steps:
Windows 95
Click on Start, Run and type D:\SETUP and click on OK
Follow the prompts for installation.

Right click on the My Computer icon on the desktop, click on Properties.
Select the Device Manager tab, double-click on CD-ROM and double-click on the type of CD-ROM, then click on the Settings tab and document the CD-ROM Type and firmware revision if available. To close the dialog box and return to Device Manager, click on OK.
Select the Performance tab.
Click on the File System button at the bottom left of the dialog box.
Select the CD-ROM tab. Change the Supplemental Cache Size to Small and Optimize access pattern for Double Speed Drive.
Click on OK, and OK again.
Click on Start and Shut Down, then Select Restart the Computer.
After the system has restarted, Open Windows Explorer and try installing Canon Creative.
Windows 3.1:
The CD information to edit is located in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
Click on File, Run and type SYSEDIT and click on OK.
On the AUTOEXEC.BAT notepad window, locate the MSCDEX line
Document the type of CD-ROM Driver that is being used. This information is found in the MSCDEX line , i.e. /D:SONY_OAK.
Change /M:xx to /M:5. If /M:xx is not there, add /M:5
Save the AUTOEXEC.BAT, exit SYSEDIT, exit Windows and power off the system.
Turn the system on and try installing Canon Creative applications.
Install Programs Manually:
If the main Setup continues to display to "Unable to Read" error message, try installing the applications individually using Windows Explorer or File Manager.
Double-click on the folder for the application you wish to install (i.e. CACard for CreataCard)
Locate and Double-click on the SETUP.EXE file within the desired application's folder.
Setup for that application will run. When it is complete, select the next one, and so on, until you have installed all desired applications.
