Q Does Canon have a Windows NT driver available?

A Although Canon does not currently support its Bubble Jet printers in Windows NT, drivers for some Canon printers are provided by Microsoft (with their operating system). The BJC-620 printer can be used in combination with the BJC-600e driver available in the list of supported printers.

Q Is the BJC-620 compatible with my parallel scanner, tape drive, or Zip drive?

A

The Canon BJC-610/620 printers have a bidirectional communication feature. This feature does not share the parallel port, and causes intermittent problems with some parallel port devices. You can correct this problem by downloading the Non-WPS Printer Drivers.

For Windows 3.x, download 720U16.exe from Windows Driver Downloads.
For Windows 95, download 720U95.exe from Windows Driver Downloads.

Q How do I install the drivers?

A Windows 95:
Turn the BJC-620 printer on. Find Canon WPS printer driver diskette #1 and insert it in the diskette drive. Next, click on Start/Run and type A:SETUP (where A: is the drive that contains the diskette), click on OK, and from there on just follow the instruction on the computer screen (it will be quite self-explanatory once you begin the driver installation routine).

Windows 3.x:
Turn the BJC-620 printer on. Find Canon WPS printer driver diskette #1 and insert it in the diskette drive. Next, in Program Manager click on File/Run and type A:SETUP (where A: is the drive that contains the diskette), click on OK, and from there on just follow the instruction on the computer screen (it will be quite self-explanatory once you begin the driver installation routine).

Q Why won't my printer print in Windows 95?

A Print head moves back and forth but no ink is dispersed.

Has the printer printed before?

If Yes: Check that ink cartridges are full, and perform a head cleaning through the WPS driver.

If No:
  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Remove all cartridges and check each to ensure that they have ink in both the front and rear compartments.
  3. Lift the small lid (with the four numbers on its top) that gives access to the print head. Don't touch the green circuit board on top of the print head.
  4. Lift the print head out and check for the orange shipping tape that may be attached.
  5. Place the print head back inside the printer.
  6. Close the lid, making sure that it clicks, and reinstall all the cartridges (be sure that each one still has liquid ink).
  7. Turn the printer on. The printer will go through an extensive head cleaning when it is powered on.

If, at the end of the start-up procedure, the printer beeps twice and the error light comes on, do the following:

  1. Press the "online" button on the printer.
  2. Perform a head cleaning via WPS software.

Let the printer run its cycle. At the end of this procedure, after the printer stops making noise, you should be ready to print with all colors.

Windows is producing an error message.

The first solution is to download A5318.EXE from the Microsoft Web site and run PRNT5UPD.EXE.

  1. Visit Microsoft at http://microsoft.com/hwtest.
  2. Select Windows 95 HCL.
  3. Select Printer from Hardware category.
  4. Select Microsoft as the company name.
  5. Click on Search.

The next page will indicate that the search "found no products that matched your request". Click on the button "See a List of Compatible Products".

Click on WDL (There may be multiple listings, select the one that gives you the correct file)

A file A5318.EXE should appear, download this file.

The driver A5318.exe contains the following files:
x86 Date Size Version
prnt5upd.exe12/3/961633924.71.121.0
readme.txt12/3/961079

Decompress the file, and execute PRNT5UPD.EXE (see the instructions below).

To install this driver, follow these steps:
  1. Create a blank formatted 3.5"/1.44MB diskette.
  2. Download the driver to the diskette by clicking the driver hot link at the top of this page, and from "My Computer" or "Windows 95 Explorer", double-click the file you downloaded - this will extract the driver.
  3. Launch Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the Add New Hardware icon. At the prompt "Do you want Windows to Search for new hardware?" click No.
  5. Click the hardware type for the driver you are installing.
  6. Click the Have Disk button.
  7. Enter the location of the driver file.
  8. Follow the instructions on your screen.
To upgrade an existing driver with this driver, follow these steps:
  1. Create a blank formatted 3.5"/1.44MB diskette.
  2. Download the driver to the diskette by clicking the driver hot link at the top of this page, and from "My Computer" or "Windows 95™ Explorer", double-click the file you downloaded - this will extract the driver.
  3. Use the right mouse button to click My Computer, then click properties on the menu that appears.
  4. Click the Device Manager tab, then double-click the device type and the device you want to upgrade.
  5. Click the Driver tab, then click the change Driver button.
  6. Click the Have Disk button.
  7. Enter the location of the driver file.
  8. Follow the instructions on your screen.

The second solution is to change the configuration of the parallel port.

To bypass this problem, in Windows 95:
  1. Click Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Double-click on Control Panel.
  4. Double-click on System.
  5. Click on Device Manager.
  6. Double-click on Ports.
  7. Double-click on LPT1 printer port (or the printer port to which the printer is connected).
  8. Click on Resources.

At this point, the printer port settings should be set to:

Input-Output Range: 0378-037x (where x stands for "any letter")
Input-Output Range: 0778-077x (you may or may not see this parameter)
Interrupt Request: 7
Direct Memory Access: 0 (or none).

If you see any different settings, then you have isolated the cause of the problem.

To change settings:
  1. Eliminate the check mark from "Use Automatic Settings".
  2. Under "Basic Configuration" toggle between the available options until you find one that produces the above parameters.
  3. Select it, click on OK.
  4. Shut down Windows 95.
  5. Restart Windows 95.

If none of the available "Basic Configuration" options matches the specified parameters, try selecting the one with the highest value, click on OK, and restart your computer. Try this procedure again, you may have different options available after you restart.

On a Compaq Presario, once back in Windows 95, return to the same screen following the steps provided above, and you will now find additional options under "Basic Configuration", one of which will give you the necessary parameters. Usually, on a Presario "4xxx" or "6xxx" series, the "Basic Configuration" should be set to 0004. On most other models, it should be set to 0003.

On a non-Compaq computer, if even after restarting Windows 95 you do not find new options to choose from under "Basic Configuration", you will have to enter the computer BIOS settings as per instruction on your computer manual, and find a choice for the corresponding parallel printer port that uses no DMA (you may have to set your printer port to "Standard" in order to set up the necessary parameters). After the appropriate parameters have been selected, exit the computer BIOS saving the changes you have made, re-enter Windows 95 and set your LPT1 (or the printer port to which the printer is connected) Basic Configuration to the option that matches the parameters given above following the indications given above.

Q What do I do if I get an "Unable to Read" error message?

A This error message may be encountered when using the Canon Creative CD to install the latest printer driver or when installing Canon Creative software.

If the error occurs, check the CD for fingerprints, smudges, or dust. If you need to clean the CD, use lukewarm water and a soft cotton cloth. Dry in a straight motion, wiping from inside edge to outside edge. Do not use a circular motion when wiping the CD as this may cause damage to the CD.

Attempt to install again:

Place CD#1 in the CD-ROM drive, and try the installation again by following these steps:

Windows 95

  1. Click on Start, Run and type D:\SETUP and click on OK
  2. Follow the prompts for installation.

Windows 3.1

  1. Click on File, Run and type D:\SETUP and click on OK
  2. Follow the prompts for installation.

Check the CD-ROM configuration:

If you continue to experience an "Unable to Read" error, try lowering the speed/cache for your CD-ROM drive by following these steps:

Windows 95:

  1. Right click on the My Computer icon on the desktop, click on Properties.
  2. Select the Device Manager tab, double-click on CD-ROM and double-click on the type of CD-ROM, then click on the Settings tab and document the CD-ROM Type and firmware revision if available. To close the dialog box and return to Device Manager, click on OK.
  3. Select the Performance tab.
  4. Click on the File System button at the bottom left of the dialog box.
  5. Select the CD-ROM tab. Change the Supplemental Cache Size to Small and Optimize access pattern for Double Speed Drive.
  6. Click on OK, and OK again.
  7. Click on Start and Shut Down, then Select Restart the Computer.
  8. After the system has restarted, Open Windows Explorer and try installing Canon Creative.

Windows 3.1:

  1. The CD information to edit is located in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  2. Click on File, Run and type SYSEDIT and click on OK.
  3. On the AUTOEXEC.BAT notepad window, locate the MSCDEX line
  4. Document the type of CD-ROM Driver that is being used. This information is found in the MSCDEX line , i.e. /D:SONY_OAK.
  5. Change /M:xx to /M:5. If /M:xx is not there, add /M:5
  6. Save the AUTOEXEC.BAT, exit SYSEDIT, exit Windows and power off the system.
  7. Turn the system on and try installing Canon Creative applications.

Install Programs Manually:

If the main Setup continues to display to "Unable to Read" error message, try installing the applications individually using Windows™ Explorer or File Manager.

  1. Double-click on the folder for the application you wish to install (i.e. CACard for CreataCard)
  2. Locate and Double-click on the SETUP.EXE file within the desired application's folder.
  3. Setup for that application will run. When it is complete, select the next one, and so on, until you have installed all desired applications.

Q Why doesn't the printed output match the screen image?

A The answer to this question depends on a wide variety of factors. Also, keep in mind that a perfect match to screen colors is not always possible due to the difference in color technology of monitor and printer output, as well as to such variables as the amount of light in the room where the monitor is located.

The Windows Printing System will perform color matching if configured correctly.

To configure the Windows Printing System for color matching:

Windows 95:
  1. Click on Start.
  2. Settings.
  3. Click on Printers.
  4. Right click on your printer.
  5. Select Properties from the menu.
  6. Click on the Graphics & Color tab.
  7. For Color Mode, select Auto-Adjust Color.
  8. For Halftoning, select Smooth.
  9. Click on the OK button.

Windows 3.x:

  1. Double-click on the Main Program Group.
  2. Double-click on the Control Panel icon.
  3. Double-click on Printer icon.
  4. Ensure that your printer is highlighted and click on Setup.
  5. Click on the Graphics & Color tab.
  6. For Color Mode, select Auto-Adjust Color
  7. For Halftoning, select Smooth.
  8. Click on the OK button.

Also, keep in mind that a perfect match to screen colors is not always possible due to the difference in color technology of monitor and printer output, as well as to such variables as the amount of light in the room where the monitor is located.

Try performing a printer self test from the BJC-620 Printer Status Window located in the Windows Printing System Program Group:

  1. Click on Options
  2. Printer Options
  3. Test printer

If colors are missing on the self test, then the printed colors are not matching those on the screen because not all color inks are available. To re-establish the correct ink flow you can try performing the Print head cleanings.

Also, you can try changing your computer display driver to VGA and print again. The printer driver, in fact, draws its information directly from the display driver. If this resolves the situation, then the solution to the color matching problem could be as easy as upgrading the display driver (please refer to your computer manufacturer for exact procedure). Please note--the VGA driver will only yield 16 primary colors. Other drivers may be required for 256 colors, or 16-bit or 24-bit color.

Finally, the quality of the printed output is strictly dependent on the software application from which the print job is generated. Try importing the graphics you are attempting to print into a strong graphics software program that you may already have, and see if this improves the quality of the output.

Q Why is my printer printing out extra characters (garbage)?
A The answer to this question may be found in a wide variety of factors. In general, it is a good idea to remove and re-install the printer driver with the diskettes that shipped with the printer. Also, make sure the printer is connected directly to the parallel printer port on back of the computer, and it does not pass through another parallel device such as a parallel drive or scanner or an A/B printer switch.

Windows 95:

  1. Make sure the BJC-620 is set as the default printer.
  2. Go to Start.
  3. Settings.
  4. Click on Printers.
  5. Right-click on the BJC-620.
  6. At this point a check mark should appear next to "Set as default." If no check mark is visible, click on "Set as default" in order to select it.

Next, try printing from DOS.In Windows 95:

  1. Go to Start.
  2. Shut Down.
  3. Restart computer in MS-DOS mode.
  4. At the C:>\windows, type: cd\ and press ENTER.
  5. At the C:> type: dir > prn and press ENTER.
  6. If the printer prints the root directory of your hard drive correctly, then both the computer printer port and the printer cable have good chances of being fine, and the problem is with an erroneous or corrupted software configuration in Windows 95.

Also, to rule out printer driver conflicts, you can try using an emulation driver for your printer such as the Canon BJC-600e mini-driver (you will be able to find that driver in the list of supported printers under Windows), in place of the original Canon driver. Be sure to set it as the "default" printer.

If, on the other hand, the printer did not print from DOS, or if it still prints garbled characters after attempting all the suggestions indicated above, then you should try replacing the printer cable and, ultimately the printer port in the back of the computer.

Windows 3.x:

  1. Make sure the BJC-620 is set as the default printer.
  2. Go to the Main Program Group.
  3. Double-click on Control Panel.
  4. Double-click on Printers.
  5. At this point in the box named "Default Printer" you should see the BJC-620. If the BJC-620 is not the default printer, click on the BJC-620 in the list of installed printers, and then click on "Set as default" in order to select it.
Try printing from DOS.
  1. In Program Manager, Go to File.
  2. Click on Exit Windows.
  3. Click on Yes.
  4. At the C:> type: dir > prn and press ENTER.
  5. If the printer prints the root directory of your hard drive correctly, then both the computer printer port and the printer cable have good chances of being fine, and the problem is likely to be found with an erroneous or corrupted software configuration in Windows.
Restart Windows
  1. Go to the Main Program Group.
  2. Double-click on Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on Printers.
  4. Disable Print Manager by clicking on the appropriate box (Bottom Right Corner).
