  3. Double-click on the Add Printer icon.
  4. Click on the Next button.
  5. Click on the Have Disk button.

  8. Make sure that LPT1: Printer Port is highlighted, and click on the Next button.
  9. Click on the Finish button.
  10. Follow the instructions on the screen until the installation procedure is completed. An icon for your printer will then appear in the Printers window.

For Windows 3.1:

  1. Double-click on the Control Panel icon in the Main program group.
  2. Double-click on the Printers icon.
  3. Click on the Add button to display the list of printers.

Otherwise, click on the Connect button to display the Connect dialog box which displays a list of available output ports to which your printer can be connected. (Only those ports that begin with LPT can be used.) Click on the LPT port to which your printer is connected, and click on the OK button to return to the Printers dialog box.
  9. Restart Windows to utilize the Cartridge Detection feature since the SYSTEM.INI file is modified.

Q Once the printer driver is installed, how do I configure the printer driver settings to utilize the infrared port?

A
  1. Click on Start/ Settings/ Control Panel, and double-click on Infrared icon. (If the Infrared icon is not present in Control Panel, refer to your computer documentation for instructions on configuring your infrared port.) Click on the Options tab and read which COM port is mentioned under the line Providing application support on.... Make a note of that COM port.
  2. Click on Start/ Settings/ Printers right-click on theBJC-80 icon and click on Properties. Once in the printer driver properties click on the Details tab and in the field named Print to the following port choose the same COM port that is mentioned in the Infrared Device Monitor as described above. Click on Apply (it will take a few seconds to regain control of the mouse).
  3. Now click on the tab of the printer driver named Control, under Tests click on Nozzle test, and click Print.

If the error message "There was an error writing to COMx..." appears on the screen, turn the printer OFF and restart the computer, making sure that all pending jobs are deleted upon exiting from Win 95/98. Once back in Win 95/98, try printing the Nozzle test once again as described under 4).

Q The printer settings are set correctly, but the printer does not print to the IRDA port.

A

Important: infrared support for the BJC-80 will only operate in Windows 95/98.

Confirm that the Infrared Device Monitor is installed on the computer. Click on Start/ Settings/ Control Panel. If no Infrared icon is present in Control Panel, refer to your computer documentation for instructions on configuring your infrared port.
If the Infrared Device Monitor is already installed on the computer, but is still not recognizing the printer, follow the checklist below (possibly following the order in which they are described). Once the BJC-80 printer is recognized, the Win95/98 Infrared Device Monitor under the Status tab will name the Canon BJC-85 as being a device in range.
Be sure that a small icon appears on the right side of the Taskbar near the clock showing a blinking red/green eye (by default, the Infrared Device Monitor will not activate automatically when Win95/98 is started). If no such item is present, click on Start/ Settings/ Control Panel, and double-click on Infrared icon in order to activate it.
Be sure that the infrared port on the side of the BJC-80 is pivoted out. In many cases, communication with the computer will not occur unless the printer's infrared port is opened up and facing the computer. Additionally, be sure there are no obstacles between the two infrared ports, and that printer and computer are not offset by an angle wider than 30 degrees. If indeed the infrared port needs to be opened, or the printer unit needs to be brought closer to the computer, after doing so turn the printer OFF and then ON.
Communication through the infrared port will only occur when the printer is turned ON and ON-LINE. If the green light is blinking, remove the paper and turn the printer OFF and ON. If the blinking light problem persists, the problem may reside with the cartridge.

Q The printer will not print from Windows

A If you try to print and nothing happens, or you receive an error such as "Error Writing to LPT 1", shut down the computer and unplug the printer's power cord. Make sure that there is a direct connection between the printer and computer. Remove any switchboxes, parallel port Zip drives, scanners, or other peripherals that are on the LPT port. Plug the printer's power cord back in and turn the computer on. Close any running applications. If no print occurs then try another cable.
