Standard Portrait Landscape Neutral Faithful Monochrome Comparison
The general-purpose 'Standard' Picture Style is the default setting Standard uniform image characteristics for EOS DIGITAL camera models.
All EOS digital cameras with Picture Styles use the STANDARD setting as the factory default. In response to user suggestions, the Standard setting gives a very crisp, vivid appearance. Contrast, color saturation, and in-camera sharpening are all raised to deliver images that will be ready for most inkjet printing or on-screen applications. Alternatively, if you prefer results similar to previous EOS digital SLRs, the Neutral setting is recommended.

Free customization through "User Defined" Picture Styles
In addition to the six pre-set Picture Styles, there are three User-Defined Picture Styles available in the EOS-1D Mark II N and EOS 5D. Users can take an existing Picture Style, make further adjustments, and save this as a separate "personal" setting. Also, Canon will provide additional specialized Picture Styles users can download and install into their camera, using any of these User Defined Picture Styles spaces.
The three "User Defined" Picture Styles: Make changes and adjustments with the "Detail Settings" function.
The "Detail Settings" menu shows the available range of changes, and lets you select any of the six Picture Styles as a starting point.

Within each of the color picture styles, users can further adjust the contrast, in-camera sharpening level, color saturation, and color tone (hue) -- and do so over a much broader range than possible with previous EOS cameras. Furthermore, you can do this within each Picture Style setting. You do not need to create a new "User Defined" picture style to adjust any of the existing pre-set Styles!
Enjoy creative freedom by fine-tuning sharpness, contrast, saturation, and color tone
The beauty of an image depends on the interaction of various factors such as high resolution, low noise, and rich coloration.
Picture Style controls sharpness (clarity), contrast (the smoothness of gradations and differences between light and dark areas), and saturation and color tone (vividness and hue). The CMOS sensor and DIGIC II work noiselessly in the background, correcting image data to a degree never before possible over a broad dynamic range.
