10 Ways to Help Avoid Counterfeit Accessories
Look closely
Tip #1 Purchase from authorized dealers or directly from the manufacturer

Purchasing from manufacturer-authorized dealers or from the manufacturer directly is the best way to ensure you get genuine accessories.

Get your genuine accessories from Canon Authorized Dealers or
Shop Direct.

Tip #2 Be careful when buying through foreign sites

Counterfeit camera accessories are a lot more common overseas than they are here in the U.S.

Tip #3 Beware of "too good to be true" prices

If you see an accessory that has a price that's too good to be true, that's a sign it might be a fake. Before you go for a deal, keep in mind what a bad battery could do to your camera.

Tip #4 Check to make sure the package is of high quality

In this case, you can judge a book by its cover. Genuine Canon replacement batteries are packaged in high quality blister packs or cardboard boxes. Canon's legitimate retail packaging bears the Canon brand and our anti-counterfeiting hologram. Canon does not sell its accessories loose or in clear plastic or paper wrappings. If you are offered an accessory in either of these types of packages, don't go for it. Also be aware of fake packaging marked with fake holograms.

Tip #5 Beware of suspicious messaging

Many counterfeiters will offer free shipping, discounts and/or other benefits if you are willing to buy loose, unpackaged accessories. These sorts of offers are a red flag that the accessory might be counterfeit.

Tip #6 Check to make sure your battery fits easily in your device

If you find that you have a hard time putting your battery into, or taking it out of your camera, camcorder or charger, it may be fake.

Tip #7 Beware of overheating

Unlike genuine Canon products, counterfeit batteries and chargers do not follow industry safety standards and may overheat, melt, smoke, ignite and/or explode when in use.

Think before you buy
Tip #8 Make sure your battery holds a charge

When you buy a replacement battery, the battery's life should be the same as the original battery that came with your camera or camcorder. If it’s not, you may have a counterfeit.

Tip #9 Compare logos

When you buy a replacement battery, compare the logo on it with the logo on your original battery or camera. It may seem like a small detail, but manufacturers apply their logos with great care. Compared to the original, a fake logo may look sloppy, blurry or misplaced.

Tip #10 When in doubt, let Canon check it out
