the gold standard for small to medium sized office
having purchased this unit 2 years ago, it has proved to be a real asset. the only drawback and complaints from employees stem from the somewhat sluggish print speed. if you're looking for basics multi-function capabilities then there are probably better options out there. However, if you appreciate ruggedness, versatility, and exceptional paper handling, then this is your machine. Having tried other manufacturers, nothing operates as sophistically as this machine. never have to worry about roller marks, paper curl, overheating, toner scatter, misregistration, or envelope wrinkling that plagues every other printer brand except the higher-end LaserJets. In fact, this thing prints envelopes beautifully as if they were done professionally - which is a real plus for businesses and essentially the litmus test that separates a quality printer apart from the rest. Toner supply is good as well and the cartridges fully last rather than force you to replace them well before they actually spent. Also a plus is that the cartridges are the only consumables that require replacement.
If the machine were to break tomorrow I replace it with the same thing. The only things that Canon should improve on with the next generation model are faster print speed, more memory (minimum 1.5 G), and automatic paper sensing. They've a ready mastered the art of paper handling. Here's hoping to their ability to not mess up a good thing.

Dead after one year
The features were good but the network interface was poor. The lack of ability to save default settings for scanning and faxing was a considerable oversight. The functionality gradually declined after about a year and is no longer functional for printing or scanning. I would definitely not recommend this model to another company.
