Select PowerShot digital cameras have Global Positioning System (GPS) technology that records when and where a picture was photographed. Bundled software also allows the user to view their photos' locations on a map.

Smart AUTO provides a simple and easy way to get sharp, bright and colorful images in many situations. It automatically detects scenes by assessing various factors in both the background and subject. Detected scenes are analyzed using a variety of presets that allow the camera to choose optimal settings to ensure the best possible image capture, whether shooting stills or video. With Smart AUTO, all you have to do is compose then take your shot. You get the results you want.
Face ID is the latest advance in face detection technology. Face ID allows up to 12 faces to be registered, giving those faces priority over others for focus and exposure. Especially useful during group shots, Face ID recognizes your loved ones, retains focus and exposure on them, ensuring that you always get great shots of friends and family.

PowerShot's Scene Detection Technology automatically analyzes faces, distance, brightness, color and movement information. The camera detects the whole scene in the frame and passes its data to Smart AUTO which then selects the proper setting for the scene, allowing the camera to deliver optimal image processing for the situation. This is an improvement over the previous Auto shooting mode, as it handles the following special scenes:

Incorporated into the Smart AUTO feature of select Canon PowerShot cameras, the Advanced Subject Detection system tracks not only faces but also other moving objects, for example, animals and automobiles. This ensures proper focus and exposure for a much wider range of shooting situations.

Now it is possible to get a great shot of a performer lit by a spotlight. Spotlight Mode detects a spotlight scene, then calculates proper exposure from the bright areas to deliver a fully detailed image with highlights intact.

Even if dark shadows obscure portions of your subject's face, you'll capture a beautifully clear, well-detailed image. When a shadowed face is detected, flash output is optimized, shadowed portions are lightened, and highlight blowouts are prevented with dynamic range correction.

By keeping the shutter button pressed halfway, Canon PowerShot cameras equipped with Servo AF/AE will continue to automatically focus on a subject and adjust the exposure on subjects either coming toward or receding from the camera.

The shooting time lag is less than the older Auto mode, and people can be captured beautifully with no lost photo opportunities. It reduces object blur by extending the ISO number. With AF in constant operation, focus on moving subjects is maintained until you're ready to get your best shot.

Face Detection AE detects darkened faces and will automatically make adjustments to brighten them. If the subjects' faces are still too dark, the flash will fire. Face Detection FE allows the flash to provide optimal brightness without washing out the subject.

Whether you're taking photos of a person or objects, the camera detects the subject's distance and switches between Normal and Macro focus modes.

For macro photos, decisions about long exposures or flash use are also made automatically. Even if darkness is detected, long exposure time is given preference over flash whenever possible.

Night Snapshot mode automatically detects subjects against a darkened background. To capture an even-balanced photo, the flash is fired to illuminate the subject. At the same time, the shutter speed is lowered to lengthen the exposure time in order to properly capture the background, preventing it from being too dark.

Night scenes typically require a higher ISO which can result in background noise. Scene Detection Technology suppresses noise. At the same time, gradations in dark areas are reduced, making black colors stand out.

The system makes minute adjustments to gradations, delivering sharpness to scenes with low contrast ratios. Conversely, if washout is detected, the dynamic range is expanded, resulting in brilliant highlights. Correctly identifying the scene once again results in a more beautiful image.

When these scenes are detected with the Scene Detection Technology's color information, either the blue saturation is emphasized to make the blue sky look better or the orange saturation is emphasized and the exposure is slightly reduced to make the sunset look better.

Snow and other high-contrast scenes can result in washed out light areas and darkened subjects. With such scenes, the system dynamically expands the range of gradations to reveal detail in the snow, keep subjects bright and provide richer colors.
Smart Flash Exposure (Smart FE) produces natural, accurately exposed flash shots by using Scene Detection technology to head off typical flash errors, including shadows on faces, under/overexposed subjects and dark backgrounds.
Daylight
Full daylight can create unwanted shadows on faces. Smart FE activates the flash so faces look their best.
Backlit Scenes
Backlighting may cause your background to be bright but your subjects to be underexposed. Smart FE adjusts camera settings and flash for natural, well-balanced shots.
Indoor Flash
By intelligently adjusting the flash, shutter speed and ISO, Smart FE helps capture a beautiful indoor shot.
Up-close Subjects
Close-ups with a flash can create shots with subjects that are too bright. Smart FE decreases the flash, opens the aperture and helps ensure the whole scene is properly lit.

Special Scene modes give you advanced presets to ensure the best possible photos under difficult shooting conditions. The number of shooting modes, including Special Scene modes, will vary depending on the PowerShot model you choose.
Smart AUTO The camera automatically selects the best shooting settings for optimal quality based on subjects and environmental factors to provide point-and-shoot simplicity.
Program The camera automatically and intelligently selects the aperture/shutter speed combination based on the shooting conditions.
Movie Digest & Hybrid Auto Automatically selects shooting settings for optimal quality and records a video clip before capturing a still image. One day's worth of clips are then combined into a video.

Putting together a video containing highlights from family vacations, important occasions and other special events is now easier than you might imagine. Using Movie Digest, you can have the camera automatically record a short video clip (up to approximately four seconds) every time you shoot a still image. The camera will then combine an entire day's worth of clips into a single video. Movie Digest also features the function to delete unwanted chapters, so your video is exactly as you want it. Select PowerShot digital cameras can also capture video in 720p high definition.

Smile Self-timer
Smile Self-timer captures even unexpected smiles by tracking your subject's face and automatically releasing the shutter up to 10 times as smiles are detected.
Wink Self-timer
With the shutter button pressed halfway, a wink from the main subject releases the shutter in about 2 seconds.
Face Detection Self-timer
Set the Face Detection Self-timer, and when the camera detects that you've joined the frame, the shutter will release.

You can select a single face among a group to focus and track, and even enlarge it to help you capture the perfect moment.

Face Detection AF finds faces, tracks them as you frame your shot, then delivers perfect focus.
Face Detection AE makes all your group shots better by properly illuminating both the faces and the background areas.
Face Detection FE adjusts the flash exposure based on the location of the faces in the frame.
Face Detection WB detects the face(s) in the shot to ensure natural skin tones as white balance is adjusted across the screen.
This advanced feature retains focus on a moving subject after the shutter button is pressed halfway, allowing you to wait for the perfect shot without refocusing.
Face Selector AF lets you focus on a specific face. The selected face is double-framed and tracked as it moves in the frame. Select PowerShot models have a dedicated Face Selector Button for easy operation.
Blink Detection lets you know right away whether one of your subjects blinked. If closed eyes are detected, a "blink warning" icon appears for 3 seconds so you can re-shoot while your subject or group of subjects is still in place.

Canon's Motion Detection Technology makes it easier than ever to capture a clear, sharp image every time. Canon technologies including Optical Image Stabilizer, Face Detection, AE Function and AF Technology all work together to detect motion, whether it is caused by camera shake, movement of faces, changes in brightness or changes between each frame. As you simply compose your shots and snap away, exposure control and ISO settings are automatically optimized based on any slight motion detected by the system.

Blur can ruin a perfectly composed shot of a fleeting moment. When the camera detects a subject in motion, it automatically sets a higher ISO number and faster shutter speed to reduce blur.

When subjects are not in motion, ISO is automatically set to a smaller number, minimizing noise and creating beautifully smooth gradations.
