Canon U.S.A Showcases Its Full Line Of Eye Care Solutions At The 2011 American Academy Of Ophthalmology

ORLANDO, FLA., October 20, 2011 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, will exhibit the Company's full line of ophthalmic solutions at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) meeting at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. As the largest national membership association of eye care professionals and ophthalmologists, members can explore the Company's newest Eyecare products, the Canon CR-2 PLUS Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera that offers Fundus Autofluorescence (FAF) photography and the TX-20 Full Auto Tonometer, at the Canon booth (1059).

The CR-2 PLUS Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera offers Fundus Auto Fluorescence (FAF) Photography in a non-mydriatic mode, that monitors macular waste materials and delivers both red-free and cobalt digital filters that are useful in evaluating the vascular and nerve fiber layers. The CR-2 PLUS utilizes Canon's 18-megapixel EOS camera technology1 that has been specifically adapted to capture detailed diagnostic images of the retina. The low-flash intensity of the CR-2 PLUS minimizes pupil constriction and shortens the time required for taking multiple pictures, including stereo photography. The CR-2 PLUS features an ergonomic design and optional hard-shell travel case to protect the unit for transport, making it a mobile retinal imaging solution. The camera can be operated using one hand to move the joystick to position the camera to the desired field of view. The control panel's simplified design allows for easy operation by an examiner and in darkly lit rooms, the buttons on the operation panel light up for navigation. The CR-2 PLUS also possesses a small pupil mode with a 3.3 mm diameter that contributes to efficient screening and assists when a patient's pupil is difficult to dilate. With the CR-2 PLUS's Automatic Exposure Function, it measures the volume of infrared light from the retina and automatically adjusts the flash intensity for observation and photography. The CR-2 PLUS also utilizes Canon's Retinal Imaging Control Software (RICS), which allows images to be captured, processed and sent to a permanent storage database as DICOM®2 or JPEG files. The images can also be printed on Canon's imagePRESS product equipment.

The Canon TX-20 Full Auto Tonometer, now FDA cleared3, is a non-contact tonometer that is compact and lightweight at approximately 33 pounds, making it easy to transport and install. With soft air puffs, the TX-20 Tonometer easily measures Intraocular Pressure (IOP), which allows doctors to perform simple eye exams efficiently and enhances patient comfort. This test is important in evaluating ocular conditions that affect the pressure inside of an eye, such as glaucoma. Whenever high IOP is detected, a warning message is displayed. The operator can enter any threshold value on the unit's settings menu to activate the warning system for that value. When running the TX-20 Tonometer in Full Auto mode, operation is halted when the threshold is exceeded. The TX-20 Tonometer can automatically move over to the opposite eye to perform the same function or can be operated manually.

The Canon CX-1 Hybrid Digital Mydriatic/Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera is the Company's first fully hybrid digital retinal camera with both mydriatic and non-mydriatic modes. With one touch, the operator can automatically switch between modes, utilizing different functions within seconds and performing several concurrent ocular tests. The CX-1 allows the user to take Color, Red-Free, Cobalt Fluorescein Angiography (FA) and Fundus Auto Fluorescence (FAF) photography in a standard configuration for both mydriatic and non-mydriatic modes. Using the non-mydriatic mode not only saves time and resources, it can also make the diagnostic procedure more comfortable for the patient.

The Canon CR-2 Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera has a compact and lightweight (approximately 33 pounds) design, resulting in an intuitive instrument that is easy to use and install. The CR-2 takes up minimal office space or, for added convenience, can be easily transported when needed. Contributing to a lower total-cost-of-ownership, the CR-2's energy-efficient design with white LED flash intensity uses less power, helping to reduce energy costs in medical facilities. The low-flash intensity minimizes pupil constriction, shortening the time required for taking multiple pictures including stereo photography. The CR-2's small pupil mode has a 3.3 mm diameter that contributes to efficient screening and assists when a patient's pupil is difficult to dilate. The auto exposure function optimizes image brightness without having to manually set the observation light and flash intensity.
