The PowerShot G15 employs a Canon 12.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor, which delivers state-of-the-art imaging performance and is optimized for use in compact cameras. Utilizing a sophisticated light-capturing design, it provides high sensitivity for improved high ISO capture with reduced noise. It is also a high-speed design, capable of rapidly capturing and moving image data to the processor, enabling faster continuous shooting and faster autofocus.
Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor
The latest-generation Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor works with the PowerShot G15's image sensor to bring phenomenal increases in processing speed and power, delivering incredible detail in more situations, without the need for artificial light sources. Improved noise reduction produces clearer images when shooting in low light at high ISO speeds up to ISO 12800. The faster processing speed results in faster continuous shooting capability while maintaining full image quality. With the power of the DIGIC 5 Image Processor, the PowerShot G15 can achieve higher ISO sensitivity and even perform advanced functions like lens correction, special scene modes and much more.
Canon HS SYSTEM for exceptional low-light performance up to ISO 12800 The PowerShot G15 gives you the power to create images with spectacular depth, detail and emotional resonance. The 12.1 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor works in concert with Canon's own latest-generation DIGIC 5 Image Processor to create the renowned Canon HS SYSTEM. With the Canon HS SYSTEM, you'll experience excellent tracking performance even in low light, and achieve gorgeous still image quality even at high ISO speeds all the way up to ISO 12800; beautiful low-light shots are possible with minimal noise and maximum detail in highlight and shadow areas. The Canon HS SYSTEM lets you use higher shutter speeds to capture clearer images with reduced noise and blur in a variety of situations for incredible photos and videos.
Excellent but fragile
I have used most of the 'G' range, exception the G5, and my favorite the G10. I love the fixed screen - its slim robust and does not require opening and closing to use the camera. The image results outstanding - and I have compared to 4/3rds cameras and its even better that my G1x. BUT the body finish of the G15 is fragile and easily damaged, mine chipped in no time and made a nice camera look very second hand after a couple of outings. So I invite Canon to comment and return the G15 finish to the robust tough finish of the G10/11/12

Nice Camera! Well built. NOTE: The aperture only goes down to f8.0. No f16 and no f22.

Best Pocket Pro
I have two DSLRs and five lenses. I have been shooting professionally for many years, but sometimes, I get tired of packing all my stuff. I bought the G15 in the hopes of finding a top of the line pocket camera. Well.....this is the one for me. Listen....it's not a DSLR...OK. But for all around shooting...it is phenomenal. And it has many sweet features, like 10fps and night shots mode that really come in handy.
I love it.

Many "professional" reviews compare this camera to similar "large sensor" cameras and conclude that the large sensor cameras "win" - but you should ignore those reviews. The optics on this camera blow away the competition - there is no 5x zoom point-and-shoot camera with an F2.8 lens at maximum zoom. I would prefer a large sensor, but the trade-off is size. To get an F1.8-2.8 lens on a large sensor camera, I think you'd need a lot of glass. The manual controls with physical knobs and two custom settings are also great. This camera replaces my G10 - which I also enjoyed for years.
