Instant AF
A critical objective when shooting in high definition is achieving the sharpest focus possible. The VIXIA HF M400 camcorder features Canon's revolutionary Instant AF focusing system which offers a dramatic improvement in auto focus speed and accuracy, compared to traditional auto focus systems. The Instant AF feature uses an external sensor, in combination with Canon's auto focus system, to help significantly decrease the time it takes to find focus, even in low light conditions. This system achieves focus instantaneously, reducing focus "hunting." This is especially beneficial in high brightness or night shooting situations. In addition, with Instant AF it's possible to capture fast, accurate focusing even when following a moving subject.
To further enhance focusing capability the VIXIA HF M400 also features Focus Assist. This helps in capturing your subject in razor-sharp focus. It works by providing a 2x magnification of your subject, which is automatically cancelled when you start recording. This is a feature normally found in professional broadcast-quality cameras.

Short learning curve, great HD performance
We make short video productions and needed a compact portable easy to use 1080p camcorder. The HF M400 delivered what we needed, true 1080p 16:9 aspect video having very impressive quality. The HF M400 is packed with features, yet has a short learning curve and easy to use controls. We were able to make quality full featured video clips after only a few hours practice. The internal microphone gave good quality audio in face-to-face interviews. When mounted on a tripod the 10x optical zoom gave smooth pan and zoom effects. For hand held shots, optical image stabilization gave great results. If you like to get technical, the HF M400 is packed with features described in a 200+ page manual. We are very impressed with this camcorder after two months heavy use. If you need true 1080p 16:9 AVCHD high definition video capability, the HF M400 delivers. No tape, no hard disc is a plus. All video goes onto two SD cards. Easy to switch out. Many more useful features on this cam. Excellent quality for price.
