The camera is equipped with a long, 5x Optical Zoom, and Canon's own Optical Image Stabilizer Technology keeps images steady and blur-free all through the zoom range - even in low light - by detecting motion and generating a corrective signal. Because it is an optical system, more corrective movement is allowed and there is no degradation of image quality.
The G12 is a highly versatile camera with a wide-angle zoom lens that reaches all the way from 28mm at the wide end to 140mm at the telephoto end (35mm format equivalent). You'll capture more image in every shot, and add greater depth to your overall photography.
I Love My G12!
It does everything I want it to do and MORE. I use it in many different settings, photographing many different people, places, and things. The only draw back is that it takes a little time from when I press down on the shutter and when the camera does its thing. I HIGHLY recommend this camera for some one that wants very high quality pictures and doesn't want to lug around a bulky DSLR.

G12 CAMERA REVIEW
I HAVE MY CAMERA SINCE DECEMBER 17, 2010. I NOTICED THAT I ALWAYS HAD A LITTLE PROBLEM WITH THE FOCUS, I THOUGH IT WAS ME. THEN ON AND OFF, SINCE THE BEGINNING, I HAD A BLANK SCREEN BUT AFTER FEW SECONDS IT WORKED NO PROBLEM.
THEN ONE DAY IN MAY IT JUST STOP WORKING THE SCREEN WENT BLANK AND THE FEW TIMES IT WORKED IT GAVE ME A DISTORTED IMAGE! MY CAMERA NEVE EVER HAD A FALL. FOR THE PRICE VERY DISAPPOINTED. I WILL LOOK FOR ANOTHER BRAND NAME.

So far I enjoy the G12, specially when travel with my child.
It's light, and still takes beautiful pictures.

Images good - built quality not
After 2 years:
- lens door mechanism broke
- massive dust intrusion in the optical viewfinder
