JPEG mode, or RAW mode. Decisions, decisions. In addition to three JPEG compression setting, the EOS-1D offers a proprietary RAW file mode for the finest possible image quality. RAW files from the EOS-1D have a number of quality advantages. Their data is recorded at 12-bits per pixel, which provides a wider range of tones and superior detail in bright highlights and deep shadows. When converting using the EOS-1D driver software, a variety of processing options and parameters provide incredible control over the finished file.
Another benefit of the large 4.15 million pixel CCD sensor in the EOS-1D is that the lens focal length factor is only 1.3x. This means more than ever, your wide-angle lenses will behave similarly to how they do on a 35mm SLR film camera, a huge benefit to photojournalists, commercial photographers, and many other professional shooters. For example, the new EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM lens behaves like a 21-45mm lens on the EOS-1D.
Unlike a film camera, the ISO Sensitivity can be adjusted between 100 and 3,200. EOS-1D's imaging sensor's ISO sensitivity can be altered freely from shot to shot, depending on the lighting and desires of the photographer. The EOS-1D provides a normal ISO range of 200-1,600 in 1/3-stop increments, and a Custom Function expands this range between 100 and 3,200. Entirely new is the EOS-1D's unique ISO Bracketing mode, which permits three bracketed exposures while maintaining the exact same aperture/shutter speed combination - the camera adjusts the ISO sensitivity to alter exposure!
There's more to image quality than just the imaging sensor. The data from the sensor must be processed and assembled to create a finished RGB file. The EOS-1D does this using a totally new Imaging Engine, a sophisticated "chip" which produces incredible color accuracy, wide tonal range and detail while minimizing the effects of digital noise. With the reduction or elimination of this noise, professional photographers have the freedom to use long exposures where necessary. On any exposure longer than 1/15th of a second, the EOS-1D automatically activates its long exposure noise reduction.
The best of both worlds, and an ideal option for the fast-paced world of photojournalism. The EOS-1D can record both a RAW image, for optimum image quality and archiving purposes, and a separate full-resolution JPEG file which provides quick access and small files sizes ideal for remote transmission over phone lines. Both files are recorded on the Compact Flash card.
EOS-1D Color Matrix. It's like choosing different types of color film. Since the best coloring for a particular shot depends on photographer preference as well as shooting conditions, Canon provides a unique color matrix function that lets you select different color characteristics as if you were choosing different types of film. Five settings let you choose between 4 variations of the standard sRGB color space or one setting for the expanded Adobe RGB (1998) color space. Color Matrix settings apply to both JPEG and RAW EOS-1D images, but can be overridden with RAW files when using Canon's driver software.
Nine White Balance modes, and new White Balance bracketing. All digital SLRs provide white balance control. But none to date provide the variety of options available in the EOS-1D. From totally automatic control to precise dialing-in of the kelvin color temperature, white balance is an example of the designed-in flexibility of the EOS-1D, and an example of Canon's belief that in a professional camera, decisions should be left to the professional.
