‘BIG
BEAR’ TV SERIES GETS A CAPTIVATING LOOK WITH
CANON HD-EC ELECTRONIC CINEMATOGRAPHY LENSES
Award-Winning Director Bruce Chun Chooses Canon HJ21x7.5B
KLL-SC and
HJ11x4.7B KLL-SC for Unique Dramatic Series
LAKE SUCCESS, NEW YORK, March 10, 2003 -- “Big Bear,”
the new 10-episode HD series, will take television production
to eye-pleasing heights, when it debuts on Canadian TV with
eerie story lines and a captivating look. The absorbing
new series was shot exclusively with Canon HD-EC (High Definition
Electronic Cinematography) lenses from Canon U.S.A., Inc.,
a subsidiary of Canon Inc. (NYSE: CAJ).
Director of Photography Bruce Chun, a past winner of Canada’s
Gemini Award for Best Cinematography for a Dramatic Series,
brought along Canon HJ21x7.5B KLL-SC and HJ11x4.7B KLL-SC
lenses for his HD debut. “We got the look we needed
with Canon lenses,” said Mr. Chun. “The producers
couldn’t be happier with the pictures, and everybody
is more than enthralled. You couldn’t ask for a better
lens for HD.”
“Big Bear” (French title: “Grande Ourse”),
a strange and eerie mystery set in an isolated village in
Northern Quebec, was a match for HD cinematography and the
world-class imagery of Canon HD-EC lenses. “The theme
is ‘Everyone Has Something to Hide,’ so lighting-wise
and stylistically, everything happens in shadow,”
explained Mr. Chun. “HD was necessary because it gets
excellent detail in shadows. The Canon 21x7.5 was the lens
of choice because it had all the definition I wanted, with
a velour-like edge. Our Canon 11x4.7B was very wide angle,
and came in handy many times with its close minimum focus.”
All HD-EC lenses have traditional film style feel and operation,
with newly designed controls. Zoom, focus and iris indications
are engraved with large luminous scales, while gear rings
are compatible with studio focus rigs, manual fluid zoom
drives and motorized control systems used for film lenses.
“Because of the greater distance between focal markings,
the Canon 21x proved to be a huge improvement over past
HD cinematography lenses when pulling focus,” say
Mr. Chun. “The Canon zooms also exhibited virtually
no focus breathing, which makes it a lot easier to stage
the action with a lot of depth, and go back and forth from
foreground to background.”
With a rotation angle of 270 (degrees symbol), Canon HD-EC
zoom lenses provide industry-leading precision in the HJ21x7.5B
KLL-SC and HJ11x4.7B KLL-SC. Canon HD-EC primes, the FJ5,
FJ9, FJ14, FJ24 and FJ35, also top the field with rotation
angle that goes as high as 166 (degrees symbol). Canon’s
innovative HDxs optics are why every piece of glass in the
HD-EC lineup brings the sharpest pictures possible to the
screen.
The best optics in HD electronic cinematography comes courtesy
of the HDxs system, the culmination of almost 20 years of
HD development by Canon. HDxs is based on Canon’s
unique Power Optical System and X-element, which allows
higher specifications and quality to be achieved in smaller,
lighter lenses.
The Canon HD-EC lenses were supplied by Montreal rental
house LYCA, Inc., a full-service provider of equipment to
the SDTV and HDTV production communities.
Working along with Director Patrice Sauve, Camera Operator
Andre Dufour and Focus Puller Martin Brouillard, Mr. Chun
was pleased to work on “Big Bear” with the same
lenses that he depended on throughout his career. “I’ve
used Canon zooms shooting commercials, music videos, films
and TV for years, and they were always great,” he
notes. “HD keeps getting better and better, and Canon
lenses are the best way to go.”
