CANON DEBUTS NEW ENG/EFP LENSES FOR HDTV AND SDTV AT NAB2004
Portable Production Evolves with HJ22ex7.6B and HJ17ex7.7B
for HDTV, J35ex11B IASD and J35ex15B IASD for SDTV
LAS
VEGAS (NAB2004, Booth # SU9649), April 12, 2004 —
Canon continues its commitment to providing the most complete
line of ENG/EFP lenses at NAB2004. With the new HJ22ex7.6B
lens and HJ17ex7.7B lens for HDTV/SDTV, and new J35ex11B
IASD lens and J35ex15B IASD lens for SDTV, Canon delivers
enhanced levels of optical quality and flexibility to portable
shooting.
"The development of these four lenses is the latest
example of the importance Canon places on evolving ENG/EFP
production," said Gordon Tubbs, assistant director,
broadcast and communications division at Canon U.S.A., Inc,
a subsidiary of Canon Inc. (NYSE: CAJ). "With the HJ22
and HJ17 models we have now released our third generation
of portable HD lenses in a fairly short time period. Meanwhile,
the J35ex15B lens offers the most telephoto focal length
available for this market."
The HJ22ex7.6B lens is the highest-quality tele portable
lens yet from Canon. As the replacement for Canon's popular
HJ21x7.8B lens, the 4 lb. HJ22 lens gives users an increased
focal length of 7.6~168mm, or 15.2~336mm with 2X extender.
With the performance of e-HDxs, it benefits from Canon's
X-Element and Power Optical System for highest-quality optics
in a compact and lightweight housing, as well as the advanced
tools of Enhanced Digital Drive.
Weighing just 3.83 lbs., Canon's new HJ17ex7.7B lens takes
HD portability even further as it replaces the widely used
HJ16x8 lens. It is a fast lens of f 1.8, and offers the
high performance of Canon's e-HDxs system. The HJ22 and
HJ17 models join Canon's exceptional line of portable HD
lenses, including the HJ11ex4.7B lens and HJ21ex7.5B lens,
all of which feature the optical excellence of e-HDxs technology,
as well as the versatility of Canon's optional Crossover
system for switchability between 16:9/4:3 formats.
The HJ22ex7.6B lens and HJ17ex7.7B lens each feature Enhanced
Digital Drive, which allows users to customize the digital
tools of their lenses with ease and precision. A key addition
is Canon's new rotary encoder servo system for zoom, focus
and iris using miniature components specifically developed
by Canon. This feature increases functionality with virtual
reality studios as well as many other applications, and
makes zoom and focus controls more precise and repeatable.
These encoders are anticipated to play a major role in supplying
precision digital lens data as metadata systems evolve for
production. All other functions of Digital Drive, including
Focus Preset and Zoom Track, Aux1 and Aux2 switches, and
ecological design elements such as lead-free glass are carried
over intact.
In SD, the J35ex11B IASD lens and J35ex15B IASD lens are
the most telephoto portable SDTV lenses available. The new
Canon J35 series replaces the extremely popular and long-running
J33 series of SDTV EFP lenses, featuring improved optics
made with the environment in mind and the highly useful
controls of Digital Drive. Focal length for the J35ex11B
lens is 11~385 mm, or 22~770mm with 2X extender, while focal
length for the J35ex15B lens is 15~525mm, achieving 1050
with 2X extender.
The J35ex11B IASD lens and J35ex15B IASD lens both employ
Canon's IFxs system, which brings higher specifications
to a lighter and more compact package. As with the predecessor
J33 series, use of the J35 series should prove widespread
for news, sports, documentaries, gyro-stabilized systems
for helicopters, and myriad other applications.
"The latest additions to our HD ENG/EFP line, the
HJ22 and HJ17 models, give users a truly spectacular range
of lens choices for handheld applications," added Gordon
Tubbs. "In offering the most telephoto portable SD
lenses yet, we expect that the new J35 series will successfully
build on Canon's considerable following in this market."
