CANON EXTENDS ADVANCED e-IFxs/HDxs TECHNOLOGY ACROSS COMPLETE
LINE OF PORTABLE HD AND SD LENSES
LAS VEGAS (NAB2004,
Booth # SU9649), April 12, 2004 — Since its introduction,
e-IFxs/e-HDxs technology has gained widespread acceptance
from camera operators as an innovative digital tool capable
of complimenting their most simple to advanced production
needs. In response to this reception and the interest of
industry needs, Canon has now made the e-IFxs/e-HDxs technology
available on its full line of portable HDTV and SDTV lenses.
Initially launched in 2003 with the J22ex7.6B lens, the
e-series, which stands for both "enhanced" Digital
Drive control functions and "ecological" design,
has been expanded to include all four of Canon's portable
HD lenses, and all three portable SD lenses.
"We're very proud to be implementing the e-IFxs/e-HDxs
technology across our full line of portable HD and SD lenses,"
said Gordon Tubbs, assistant director, broadcast and communications
division at Canon U.S.A., Inc, a subsidiary of Canon Inc.
(NYSE: CAJ). "Made with the environment in mind and
with its enhanced Digital Drive functionality, this is Canon
technology that makes a difference."
Now available on all four of Canon's portable HD lenses,
the e-HDxs lineup includes:
• The all new HJ22ex7.6B lens
• HJ21ex7.5B lens
• The all new HJ17ex7.7B lens
• HJ11ex7.5B lens
The e-IFxs offerings have also been expanded in SD, with
a lens lineup that includes:
• J22ex7.6B lens
• J17ex7.7B lens
• J11ex4.5B lens
Enhanced Digital Drive allows operators to customize the
digital control functions of their lenses with a high level
of efficiency and precision. A key feature is Canon's new
rotary encoder servo system for zoom, focus and iris using
miniature components specially developed by Canon. This
feature increases functionality with virtual reality studios
as well as many other applications, and makes zoom and focus
controls more precise and repeatable. These encoders are
anticipated to play a major role in supplying precision
digital lens data as metadata systems evolve for production.
Also adding to the usefulness of Digital Drive is an informational
display and X-Y axis switch for easy access to the lens'
digital controls. Operators can quickly deploy such functions
as:
• Speed Preset, Shuttle Shot, Zoom Track and Focus
Preset;
• Follow signal display for iris, zoom and focus
for virtual reality, robotic control and other uses;
• User settings for zoom and focus curve mode for
precise control based on the user's needs;
• New AUX1 and AUX2 switches can be assigned for
basic functions for enhanced memory capability;
• Precise movement mode can be memorized for the
zoom seesaw control, zoom demand control and present control;
• The drive unit can memorize 9 patterns of user-customized
settings and also transmit the data between different
drive units; and
• Self-diagnostic mode.
"e-IFxs technology was an instant success when we
introduced it last year," added Gordon Tubbs. "Canon's
customers told us they wanted more, and now e-IFxs/e-HDxs
technology comes on every portable HD and SD lens we sell."
Canon demonstrates its concern for the environment by selectively
choosing materials that have the least negative environment
impact when manufacturing its e-IFxs/e-HDxs series. Optical
parts feature lead-free glass, and mechanical products to
help reduce the Environmental Tax on the planet.
