CANOBEAM COMES
THROUGH FOR
NEW YORK STATE UNIFIED COURT SYSTEM
Free Space Optics Solution Proves Critical for Post-September
11th Data
Connectivity
NEW YORK: Directly following the tragic events that occurred
in New York City on September 11th, the New York State
Unified Court System, located just blocks from Ground
Zero, put in an emergency call to Canon. In need of a
wireless, secure broadband data link to restore communications
between several buildings, they chose the Canobeam optical
beam transceiver. Canon's free space optics (FSO) solution
was able to restore the Courts Fast Ethernet to full power
immediately.
"The New York State Unified Court System had established
a huge network to connect all their city buildings to
each other as well as court houses throughout the state,"
explains Ken Ito, Senior Product Manager for Canon Broadcast
& Communications. "With many of their T-1 and
frame relay circuits damaged after the attack, they needed
a high capacity, rapidly-deploying system to re-establish
their backbone. That's where Canobeam came in."
Already under evaluation by the Court's for a planned
network upgrade, Canobeam was the clear networking solution
for the dire situation the World Trade Center disaster
presented. Capable of transmitting up to 622 Mbps in a
straight-line distance of up to 2km, Canobeam's fast setup,
autotracking alignment technology, and support of SNMP
made it an ideal way to reconnect, and ultimately strengthen,
the Court's Ethernet. Additionally, the high bandwidth
provided by the Canobeam allowed the Courts to effectively
implement voice over IP (VoIP) throughout their network
at a time when traditional phone lines and cellular service
was undependable.
Canon's long-standing commitment to customer support
took on new meaning, as the New Jersey-based staff made
themselves and a Canobeam immediately available and worked
through the weekend to ensure comprehensive training for
court personnel. As a result of the system's easy alignment
and dependable operation, the New York State Unified Court
System was able to restore their data connections less
than a week after the tragedy. The Courts plan on keeping
the Canobeam links in place permanently -- and have subsequently
ordered additional Canobeams for a continuing role in
long-term network management and expanded VoIP traffic.
With no FCC allocation required, dependable signal strength,
and the ability to interface with multiple network types,
users are choosing Canobeam for a growing number of applications.
Now in its third generation, the Canon system has emerged
as a leading solution for both carriers and enterprise
users.
"It was good to know that Canon equipment could
help out after the WTC disaster," says Ken Ito. "FSO
has always been looked upon as a technology that would
function at a high level in emergencies. In this tragic,
high-pressure situation, Canobeam proved how important
the right wireless connection can be."
