CANOBEAM DT-50
AWARDED MIERCOM
"NetWORKS AS ADVERTISED"
SEAL OF APPROVAL IN INDEPENDENT TEST
Confirms
Effectiveness of Free Space Optics Solution From Canon
ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, NJ: Canon Broadcast & Communications
today announced that the Canobeam DT-50 has been awarded
the "NetWORKS As Advertised" seal of approval
from Miercom, the independent networking consultancy and
product test center located in Princeton Junction, NJ.
The recognition was awarded to the Canobeam optical beam
transceiver system following extensive testing at the
Miercom lab facility.
The award confirms the Canobeam's status as a highly
effective free space optics (FSO) solution for the secure,
high-speed transmission of data. Miercom performed a rigorous
series of tests evaluating Canobeam's qualities of installation/configuration,
ease of use, functionality, performance, and ability to
meet industry expectations.
Tests demonstrated Canobeam's ability to securely transmit
data at speeds of 622 Mbps (ATM/OC-12), while connecting
across a straight-line distance of 1 km. (The Canobeam
is capable of transmitting 2 km at OC-3). In addition,
the Canobeam's fast building-top setup, breakdown and
relocation were acknowledged, providing reliable links
by a unique Auto-Tracking System. Canobeam accommodates
Fast Ethernet, FDDI, ATM, SONET, SDH and no FCC frequency
allocation is ever required.
"By being one of the first FSO devices to earn the
Miercom 'NetWORKS As Advertised' seal, Canobeam demonstrates
that it is a real performer, with the range and capacity
to transmit data at very high speeds over terrain,"
says Gordon Tubbs, Assistant Director for Canon's Broadcast
and Communications Division. "We have always maintained
that Canobeam's laser is a fast, dependable and cost-effective
data connection that maximizes the efficiency of free
space optics. Miercom's independent tests are the latest
evidence to back this up."
"With its high throughput rates and the ease of
setup and maintenance, the system is perfect for permanent
or even temporary links between buildings," says
Uwe Bilger, Senior Test Engineer for Miercom. "Considering
the high costs of leased lines, the costs of the
license-free Canobeam system can be recouped within a
short period of time. The performance is excellent, and
the built-in tracking system proved to hold the link at
a stable state. Even in metropolitan areas with a lot
of radio noise, the Canobeam system will perform well,
since it does not have to deal with interference."
"We are happy to present Canon Broadcasting and
Communications with the 'NetWORKS As Advertised' seal
of approval for Canobeam," says Rob Smithers, President
of Miercom. "This laser-based system is an excellent
tool that advances the application of free space optics
to high speed data transmission, and more than meets our
criteria for recognition from Miercom with this prestigious
designation."
