CANON’S MEDICAL SYSTEMS DIVISION EXPANDS DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY LINE

Large-Area Portable System Brings DR To Patient Bedside

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA, July 19, 2004 -- The Medical Systems Division of Canon U.S.A., Inc., will show its full line of digital radiography (DR) products during AHRA 2004 that feature a variety of medical technology advances and increased versatility to help medical professionals provide improved patient care. One system, the Canon CXDI-50G, is a large-area portable DR system that can be used at a patient’s bedside. Canon U.S.A. is a subsidiary of Canon Inc. (NYSE: CAJ).

This DR system will be displayed at the Canon booth (#622) at the American Healthcare Radiology Administrators 32nd Annual Meeting and Exposition (AHRA), August 2 – August 4 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts. The company also will display the other systems in its DR line: the Canon CXDI-40G General DR system, the Canon CXDI-31 Portable DR system and the Canon DR Image Viewer.

Canon CXDI-50G Portable Digital Radiography System

Displaying a strong commitment to innovation in medical imaging, the Canon CXDI-50G is a portable digital radiography system designed for diverse applications that include trauma and bedside exams. The Canon CXDI-50G combines a large imaging area (14 x 17 inches) with a lightweight design (10.6 pounds and less than an inch thick) that extends the range of radiographic exams which can be completed with DR.

The Canon CXDI-50G is large enough for chest and abdominal X-rays yet it is as easy to position as a conventional film cassette or CR imaging plate when performing lateral or axial imaging of limbs and other areas. If necessary, a patient easily can hold the sensor in place during image capture.

The compact design allows the Canon CXDI-50G to be applicable for a wide range of X-ray room applications that are difficult to perform with fixed devices. It also can be used at a patient’s bedside. When combined with a mobile X-ray unit, the Canon CXDI-50G brings digital radiography directly to the patient. Up to now, hospitals and other medical facilities could not capture DR images of patients who could not leave bed.

With a portable sensor designed for patient comfort, and quick and efficient access to images, the Canon CXDI-50G provides speed and efficiency to help diagnose even the most critically ill patients.

Whether capturing images in the X-ray room or at the bedside, preview images can be viewed as quickly as three seconds and total image processing time is only 20 seconds. With the Canon Amorphous Silicon Flat Panel Sensor, the Canon CXDI-50G produces high-resolution radiographic images in 4,096 grayscale. The sensor contains about six million pixels, with each only 160 microns.

The Canon CXDI-50G is the company’s second portable DR system. In 2001, the company unveiled the Canon CXDI-31 as the world’s first portable digital radiography system. It has a 9 x 11-inch sensor that is used for neo-natal, pediatric, orthopedic and other applications in facilities worldwide.
