CANON CASE STUDY: Canon Lenses Take Center Stage in
Major Corporate Events Production by AVHQ Show Solutions

The Challenge: AVHQ Show Solutions, a major corporate events producer, required lenses that could meet their clients’ demands for better-than-broadcast production values.

The Solution: Canon lenses achieved the life-like video and heightened zoom capabilities needed to meet the exacting production needs of high-profile shareholder meetings and product launches.

The top producers of major corporate events today are often asked to meet extremely high standards that are even better than broadcast. For AVHQ Show Solutions, which produces hundreds of shareholder meetings and product launches each year for a client list that includes Microsoft, Pfizer, and Home Depot, video production needs for big-screen display and archiving are intense.

Equipped with Canon lenses such as the Digi-Super 86xs, AVHQ is delivering stunning video and the shake-free shooting of Canon’s Shift-IS image stabilization. “Canon helps us to satisfy a corporate audience and client base that is very demanding: They expect it to look perfect, and there are no second chances,” says Chris Peterson, Senior Project Manager for AVHQ. “These events are a hybrid of TV and very short-run theatrical productions, complete with scripts and producers. The video has got to be the absolute best possible, and Canon lenses provide the image quality and durability that fits in well with those expectations.”

Charged with the responsibility of producing video at specifications higher than SDTV, AVHQ starts with Canon lenses for imagery that will be magnified on super-sized video screens, as well as recorded at the highest resolution possible. With 4000+ people in attendance at the largest events, Canon’s famed Digi-Super 86xs with Shift-IS, which is capable of eliminating vibrations at a frequency of up to 10 Hz for unparalleled precision at the telephoto end, is a must. 'We love the Canon lenses with Shift-IS because we need to account for a venue floor having vibration," notes Peterson. “We could be doing a waist-up shot of an executive at a podium from 250 feet away. Those shots require a very steady image, and the camera operator may have to sit on it for five minutes or more. A shot like that used to be extremely challenging, but with Canon’s Shift-IS, it’s a lot easier to handle.”

AVHQ has a broad range of lenses from Canon U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of Canon Inc. (NYSE: CAJ), ranging from the HD/SD ready Digi-Super 86xs (XJ86x9.3B IE-D) and Digi-Super 75xs (XJ75x9.3B), to the J55X Super (PJ55x9B IE) and portable J33ax11B IASD with the useful tools of Digital Drive. If additional Canon lenses are needed, they will be supplied by outlets such as rental house VER Rentals.

No matter what the occasion, AVHQ’s Canon lenses meet the heightened standards of the field. "I believe our industry demands more out of our video image than the TV broadcast industry," Peterson says. "Generally we’re displaying to a large audience, on a screen that’s higher resolution than SDTV. The precise focus we have in the Canon lenses is very important, because without it, the image will just be amplifying mistakes. Our industry is heading towards HD, and when we get there HD-ready lenses like the 86xs will prove to be an even better value."

With the pressure of producing events that can affect stock prices, the reliability that comes with the Canon name gives AVHQ the confidence to handle a Fortune 500 Board of Directors with ease. “Canon is a no-fail product,” says Peterson. “In this business, I want stable, reliable technology. I would say that Canon gives me an excellent return on my investment.”
