CANON U.S.A. LAUNCHES 'CANON COMPATIBILE' TESTING PROGRAM FOR ALLIANCE AND INDUSTRY MARKETING PARTNERS
New Certification Program Enables Third-Party Software and Vertical Industry Application Software Providers to Verify Interoperability with Canon Imaging Systems Products

CANON DIGITAL SOLUTIONS FORUM, LAS VEGAS — October 27, 2004 — Canon U.S.A., Inc., the nation's market share brand leader in black-and-white and color laser copier/printer solutionsi, today announced new independent compatibility testing services for the company's Imaging Systems Group Alliance and Industry Marketing (AIM) program partners. Canon U.S.A. alliance partners are now able to submit products to VeriTest, the testing division of Lionbridge (Nasdaq: LIOX), in order to undergo controlled laboratory testing for basic compatibility and interoperability verification with Canon's imageRUNNER and CLC printer/copier devices.

Partners meeting basic marketing and compatibility requirements will be eligible to promote "Canon Compatible" solutions through Canon U.S.A.'s Marketing Alliance program, designed to help leading software and hardware companies deliver new solutions and ultimately present increased technology value to end-customers. Canon's Marketing Alliance Program helps identify and promote third party solution providers that add such value to Canon's core line of imageRUNNER, CLC, and Integrated Filing Systems products.

"Just as Canon's networked copier technology evolves, so does the industry's demand for increased efficiency and cost-savings through integrated document management solutions. By offering an independent testing authority to objectively verify the compatibility of imageRUNNER and CLC devices with various printer configurations and selected third-party applications in specific server environments, Canon can better deliver optimum document management solutions for office and production environments," said Dennis Amorosano, director and general manager, Integrated Solutions Group, Canon U.S.A.

The VeriTest process has been designed to simulate a cross-section of test configurations, including various combinations of multifunction device applications, operating systems, servers and network configurations. Upon completion of the testing process, Canon U.S.A. will publish test plans and results at http://www.veritest.com/clients/reports/canon as a public validation of third party solution compatibility with Canon copiers and related products.

"The value of such a program and that of VeriTest's services is represented by the thoroughness and rigor of the testing methodologies implemented, which are ideally suited to fulfill a critical public verification and marketing role," added Amorosano. "Canon U.S.A.'s AIM program serves as a significant resource to our alliance partners, and represents a vehicle for presenting optimal, effective and objectively validated end-to-end equipment and document management solutions to our customers."

"Access to the authorized dealer channel and the opportunity to actively participate in a market-recognized validation program can be instrumental to effective co-marketing efforts," says Rory Cowan, CEO, Lionbridge. "The ability to publicly validate product compatibility will reinforce and strengthen the comfort level of potential customers considering Canon solutions and their alliance partner systems."

"The access to the authorized dealer channel and the opportunity to actively participate in the many co-marketing activities that come with being a member of Canon's Alliance and Industry Marketing Program have been instrumental to our success," says Eric Rodriguez, president of Ribstone Systems, providers of imaging software geared for the legal market. "We take great pride in knowing that the ability to publicly validate our product compatibility with Canon will reinforce and strengthen the comfort level of potential customers considering our system."

Canon's AIM organization evaluates potential partners and allies based upon the potential for third-party software to drive value to end customers and its ability to support the authorized dealer channel. Candidates that sufficiently meet specified criteria will then submit their products to VeriTest to undergo basic compatibility testing. Upon successful completion of the testing program, Canon will package the partner products to the Canon authorized dealer channel.
