Behind the Beauty
Through working with influencer Olivia Rink, I’ve become more aware of how social media affects people, especially women, both positively and negatively.
I chose this concept because the content Olivia and I typically create is a few beautiful shots, perfectly lit and composed, with a carefully curated outfit, in the ideal location, with a gorgeous, successful woman. What’s not pictured is the very “real life” work that went into that perfect shot. Me, stuffing myself into the passenger seat of a 100-degree cab, with a heavy backpack on, camera in one hand, phone in the other, trying to pull up the address of the next location. Olivia, trying to change in the back seat while her phone is blowing up and she can’t find her other shoe. Pulling up next to a group of people on the corner while she’s only half-way dressed. Then, getting to our destination to find it’s cluttered with construction and needing to improvise because there’s only 10 minutes of sun left.
Those chaotic moments are hard to capture, but I feel it’s important for followers and fans to realize that social media influencers are humans who stress, get flustered, have bad days and feel sometimes like they’ve failed. In the images I shared, I wanted to showcase the final image along with the moments that led up to it. It’s the final product that makes the story behind it worth it.
I think I became a storyteller when I became a photographer, although I had no idea what it all really meant. Over the years, I realized what a gift it’s been, both to me and others. To know I am the reason a moment in a story lives on— there’s something about that, that I can’t quit.
Alicia Fierro was born and raised in Southern California. She took up photography as a hobby after dropping out of a graphic design program. She became passionate about creating images, which led to pursuing a photography business full time in 2009, with weddings as her main focus. She’ll always consider herself a wedding photographer, but since moving to Chicago, she’s had the opportunity to work with and photograph blogger/ influencer Olivia Rink. Creating content with Olivia has been such a fun change of pace for Alicia, and a new way to flex creative muscles.
