Comfort in Change

Judy Kim

Being revolutionary means making a commitment to change. I never anticipated drastically changing my life, but once it was set in motion, I was fully committed. I made a change in my career because I wanted to express myself creatively every day and share it with others. Without intention, fashion carries over to my food styling and photography work. I consider color palette, tone, texture and, most importantly, taste and presentation.

I wanted the imagery on this shoot to evoke memories from the transition of my career before I even knew I would change industries. The food itself represents cultural exposure during my travels. In Florence, Italy, our vendors thoughtfully brought us to their favorite local spots and treated us like family. They used few but exceptional seasonal ingredients – sometimes it looked more like arranging food than cooking it. They made it look effortless, which has become one of my main goals. I want food to look casual and inviting. I shopped the local farmers market for inspiration and came up with this creamy mushroom and thyme pasta made with garlic confit and white wine sauce. It is accompanied by a little gem salad with watermelon radishes, tomatoes and rustic homemade croutons made with torn bread.

“Planning is always involved, but sometimes you just go with your gut.”

I have also been collecting ceramics throughout all my travels, and it makes me appreciate the skill of the artists. I wanted to use a moody noir setting with pops of color from the food. I was inspired by dark ceramics and chose a selection of matte and shiny pieces.

Planning is always involved, but sometimes you just go with your gut after making a few key decisions. Styling typically starts slow, but with every tweak it builds momentum. Whether I’m styling or shooting, there is always an exciting turning point where the food shines, the lighting is just right, and the scene comes together.

This shoot was about combining my passions for food, ceramics, fashion and travel. The project has helped me realize how intertwined they really are in my life.
