The MENSECURITY PROJECT
On the sartorial side of things, I give my audience a safe space to openly speak about male insecurities and body issues, empowering them to navigate both social media and real life more confidently.
For this project I chose to focus on real guys that don’t fit the “standards” of mainstream fashion and manliness. For me to be effective at what I do—create open arenas for guys to talk about body issues and insecurities—it’s most important that I listen to the voices of people who deal with a variety of obstacles.
Masculinity has been traditionally tied to shallow things like physique, sexual orientation and level of income. These are guys who have found their own ways to conquer self-doubt through personal style and pursuing their passions and careers.
Jose Figueroa pushed through his insecurities about his modest height to become a menswear influencer. He found that “getting dressed” is about more than the clothes you put on, but also the attitude and confidence you wear with them.
Ty Severe, a travel blogger from Los Angeles, battled his insecurities of being tall and skinny by elevating his style.
He found that well-tailored suits gave him the confidence-boost to feel comfortable in his skin, allowing him to focus on more important things.
Jason E.C. Wright is a design researcher based in Los Angeles. He found that lack of finances didn’t have to mean lack of style.
He used his inability to afford name-brand clothes to develop his own style, building more confidence along the way.
CJ Johnson is an award-winning content creator, entrepreneur, and internet personality who – at times – has struggled with accepting his baldness.
But through working towards his passion for helping others, he found confidence in himself and his personal style.
As a digital storyteller standing at the intersection of tech, fashion and lifestyle, Devan represents a new era of influence no longer defined by large followings, but by the communities and cultures they create. Since 2015, he’s been developing his digital platforms and creating innovative content for a growing list of brands across industries. Through this, he has mastered the mechanics of monetizing his art and aims to empower others to do the same.
