We got an early start for our trip to the mountains of Waddington Range, located in British Columbia, Canada. The Waddington Range is extremely rugged with a complex set of peaks, a challenge for an avid climber like myself. In my equipment bag was the new EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera. I had planned to put its versatility to the test on this trip. Over a two-day period, I was genuinely impressed by its incredible focus speed and accuracy to the different shooting situations around us.

Canon See Impossible - Jimmy Chin - Snow Field

Day 1 – 6:58 AM
We started our journey into the cold and ice. It was a blanket of white as far as our eyes could see. I shot this with the RF 50mm F1.2 L USM lens at 1/400 second @ f/6.3, ISO 100. Love the super sharp optics on this camera. The EOS R camera captured precise detail of the patterns in the snow drifts around us.

Day 1 – 9:00 AM
With how bright the mountain light can be, the incredible LCD screen was clear enough that I could still use it in these conditions. The touchscreen LCD was adjustable for various levels of brightness and color, as well as having extensive flexibility, so regardless of the environment, I could easily compose my images. I used the RF 28-70mm F2 L USM lens. Since it was so bright out, I captured this at 1/8000 second @ f/2.8, ISO 100.

Day 1 – 8:49 PM
Towards the evening there isn't much natural light in the mountains. As the sun was beginning to set on the horizon, I was able to capture this image hand held. The low-light AF performance on the EOS R is incredible. I used the RF 35mm F1.8 MACRO IS STM lens for this image, set to 1/160 second @ f/4.0, ISO 100.

Day 1 – 9:23 PM
I was further impressed by the capabilities of the EOS R when I got this image. I shot this in extremely low light, hand held as well. This image was captured using the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens at 1/40 second @ f/4.0, ISO 400. The night was settling in and we were getting ready to camp down as well.

Day 2 – 6:08 AM
Day break. We woke up early to get ready for our last day of our trip. The sun was just peeking through the mountains as I shot this image using the Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens at 1/80 second @ f/20, ISO 125. I wanted to use the EF 16-35mm lens because I love the 18-point sun flare star it creates. Combined with the shadows of the peak, this became my favorite shot of this trip.
