We were privileged to capture images of dawn patrol as a select group of balloon pilots took to the air in the dark pre-dawn hours to mass ascensions of over 550 hot air balloons. Mix those exciting morning adventures with the evening photo opportunities of these festive balloons as they tethered for the crowds illuminating their colorful envelopes at twilight for all to enjoy. We were then treated to magnificent pyrotechnic displays to end the long days.

I am fortunate to not only hold the honor of being one of Canon's elite Explorers of Light but I am also a licensed hot air balloon pilot. Flying a hot air balloon and photographing from the air is a remarkable experience. Each day I flew with my Canon EOS 1DX equipped with my EF 28-300 mm 3.5-5.6 IS L lens as well as my EOS 5D Mark IV and the versatile 16-35 mm 2.8 L lens for the wider views as I floated over the Fiesta Park field while balloons inflated and launched into the cool skies of New Mexico.

My favorite goal was to maneuver my balloon to the north or west to try and accomplish a "splash and dash" in the Rio Grande River. The first morning I launched and did in fact find my way across the river. The winds down at the surface provided me the ability to steer the balloon and reach the gently flowing waters. For a few minutes, I was able to place my balloon basket on the water surface and flow along with the current of the Rio Grande!

I am able to share a little bit of the photographic diversity that I captured from both the ground and from the air. It is a magnificent feeling to slowly pass over balloons inflating at various stages or look deep into the graphic abstract designs of the semi-inflated envelope. It is all in the timing of where to be and when to be there, mixed with a little bit of luck!
