The newest addition to the Canon reference display lineup is the DP-V2411, a 24” 4K reference monitor that includes the luminance performance and black levels required for shooting in HDR, along with advanced features to aid in simplifying and demystifying the process.
One of the important aspects of HDR shooting is being able to properly preview the scene being captured within the expanded values that an HDR color grade will provide. This starts with having extended luminance values and a solid black level reference point. The DP-V2411 offers full screen white value of 600 nits (with Boost on -- 1000 nits), and a black level of 0.005 nits, providing a sufficient luminance level for on-set video reference.
Shooting for HDR delivery is obviously not just about properly visualizing the high contrast expressed from the extreme values of bright whites and deep blacks, but also maximizing the subtle values in between and the subsequent shades of colors reproduced.
The IPS liquid crystal panel and Canon image processing technology offer exceptional contrast. It faithfully reproduces both dark and bright areas, which are essential for broadcast and cinema video production, so it accurately expresses gradation in darker areas while displaying brighter parts with clarity.
The DP-V2411’s 10-bit display panel achieves high-accuracy color reproduction uniformity thanks to a proprietary image processor, which allows fine-tuned adjustments to prevent color and luminance unevenness on the screen – achieving high-accuracy uniformity within the PQ (SMPTE ST 2084/ITU-R BT.2100) and Hybrid Log Gamma standards. It offers presets for a variety of LOG gammas, including Canon Log 1, 2, and 3, Arri Log, and support for EOTF (Electro Optical Transfer Function) in broadcast and cinema standards. Up to eight previously produced 1D-LUTs can be imported as well.
To realize optimum image quality performance for on-location work, a backlight LED has been employed, and LEDs optimized for the panel have been used to achieve a wider color gamut. It supports multiple broadcast standards such as ITU-R BT.709, EBU, and SMPTE-C along with the DCI-P3 digital cinema standard, and also meets the next-generation standards of ITU-R BT.2020 and ACESproxy, the transmission standard of ACES.
The DP-V2411 also includes a host of features for more convenient HDR production. A 12G HD-SDI terminal connection enables HDR/SDR reference functions, and 4K/60P video transmission with just a single cable. This feature, along with a thin, lightweight body makes it one of the best choices for on-set monitoring for any production offering quality, function and convenience. 24V DC power and LAN/REMOTE are supported, allowing the display to be used outdoors or operated from external equipment. This enhances convenience for field shooting situations such as drama or documentary production.
Variable adjustment of the HDR range is possible for specific applications. For example, the dynamic range of the HDR standard signal or LOG signal can be displayed to fit within the luminance supported by the display main unit (range compression), or required actual luminance parts of the range can be displayed with the highlight range area excluded (range upper limit clipping). Values can also be preset to function or channel buttons, so users can call up and confirm HDR standard images with just one touch.
Metadata (color gamut, gamma, maximum luminsance, average luminance maximum value of content) from HDMI compatible video editing PCs, Blu-ray players, cameras and other devices can be displayed onscreen. This aids in proper HDR production by allowing simultaneous monitoring of images and checking of HDR data.
Along with conventional waveform monitor support, it offers the capability to display scales for each HDR signal (Hybrid Log-Gamma and SMPTE ST 2084 – PQ). Signal luminance levels can be confirmed according to each standard, bringing improvement in quality and efficiency for HDR video reference.
In addition to multiple options of two-screen comparison display of two images from two different signals, it can also do side-by-side comparison display for images from the same channel. This enables a variety of comparison displays from a single cable in both 4K and 2K without having to remove or insert the cable, enabling more efficient video production.
The installed false color supports PTE ST 2084(PQ) as well as Hybrid Log-Gamma-supporting HDR. It displays portions of the screen in different colors according to the input luminance signal. It makes the state of exposure in HDR shooting visually clearer, and it makes the luminance level easier to confirm by displaying the colored portion in gradation.
As you might expect, the DP-V2411 offers seamless integration when used with Cinema EOS cameras, but is also integrated with Arri camera systems and Log C as well. It receives and displays the camera’s metadata. Camera information can be checked on the display instead of the viewfinder during on-site camera setup.
The DP-V2410 performs a live debayer of the RAW image data from Cinema EOS cameras, enabling immediate on-set viewing, and presets in the display’s menu allow for image quality checks just by connecting the camera – without the need to add LUTs.
Intended as a more portable, on-set option to the DP-V2420, the DP-V2411 design features an aluminum frame to improve rigidity and strength. The attached stand is designed for safe installation and to prevent it from tipping over. It supports multiple positioning and transporting styles, with screw holes for securing the stand to a tabletop. The slim, lightweight body offers superb on-set mobility. It can be easily transported with one hand and includes a single detachable handle for use according to applications.
