True Widescreen Video

You want your memories to last forever- that's why you've taken the time to shoot them. And you want to shoot in widescreen format to get everything you can out of your new widescreen TV or home theater system.

So why is the way you record widescreen images so important? Because you want an image made for widescreen, not adapted for widescreen. Widescreen is the future- every HD television is widescreen.

The story of how we do it may be a bit technical, but the result is clear to see. Canon camcorders use the entire width of its image sensor to capture your precious video in true 16:9 format. What difference does that make? It's simple. With more pixels captured, you get better image quality. Other camcorders force the wider picture into a smaller space on the sensor- giving you a less true image, with fewer pixels and lower quality. On a Canon camcorder, the canals of Venice will be as grand as you remembered seeing them.

In addition, the viewfinder on your Optura S1 will display the image in a "letterbox" view- from side to side and top to bottom, what you see will be what you get. No guessing and extra work, looking at an image that's distorted like a fun house mirror. You can also use the widescreen feature in both Program Mode and Easy Recording Mode and can be used along with the camcorder's advanced image stabilization.

All of the Opturas give you the opportunity to own a camcorder that shoots as wide as your widescreen TV. Why shouldn't your camcorder shoot as wide as your widescreen TV? It should- and our competitors can't match the widescreen video you'll get from your Canon Optura.

Remember- widescreen is the future- be sure you invest in that future with a Canon camcorder.

Optical Performance You Can See

Because of Superior Canon Optics, the name Canon is synonymous with unsurpassed optical performance. Canon's expertise in designing lenses for photography and broadcast television goes into every camcorder we make -- and the Optura S1 is no exception. Genuine Canon Optics is just one of the DV Photo Plus technologies that unleash the digital potential of your camcorder and ensures outstanding results.

The Optura S1 comes with a 10X optical zoom lens, precisely matched to the camcorder's CCD and featuring a unique spectral coating to reduce flare and ghosting. Combined with the camcorder's 200X digital zoom, the lens gives an impressive range of focal lengths. That means you always have the perfect lens for every one of life's coolest moments.

Image Stabilization

Canon's Advanced Image Stabilization also ensures unsurpassed optical performance -- whether you're shooting high action events or capturing a shot at a long focal length. Thanks to Canon's superior electronic expertise, the Optura S1's image stabilization system corrects camcorder shake instantly, even when panning or zooming.

Brilliant Video

Megapixel CCD

DIGIC DV

Low Light Performance

Megapixel CCD

Enjoy crisp images and stunning true-to-life color with the Optura S1's 2.2 Megapixel CCD -- one of the DV Photo Plus technologies that ensure outstanding results. In the Optura S1, this performance is combined with Canon's advanced RGB Primary Color Filter. Other camcorders process color using a standard CMYG filter, resulting in duller colors. Canon's RGB filter separates light into its red, green and blue components, resulting in professional-quality images with natural-looking tones and vivid hues. Together, the 2.2 Megapixel CCD and RGB color filter deliver uncompromisingly brilliant results.

DIGIC DV

Because Canon's exclusive DIGIC DV signal processing circuit processes video and still images differently, you get uncompromising image quality for both. Video and still images have different color requirements and DIGIC DV technology processes the two signals accordingly. That means your video images are maximized for viewing on monitors and for projection. DIGIC DV is just one of Canon's DV Photo Plus technologies that help to unleash the performance potential of the Optura S1.

Low Light Performance

Now you can keep shooting long after the sun goes down thanks to the Optura S1's low light performance. With the Night Mode, the sensitivity of the camera's CCD is automatically boosted and the shutter speed is lowered to give you better performance in low light conditions.

In Night Mode, you can keep the camcorder's mini Video light on continuously, for shooting under the most demanding conditions.

Stunning Digital Photography
Wide variety of photo features transform your ultra-stylish Optura S1 into a high-quality 2.2 Megapixel digital camera.

CCD and RGB Color Filter

DIGIC DV

Simultaneous Photo Recording

Auto-Exposure Dial with 12 Shooting Modes

Image Settings

Built-in Flash

Flexible Auto Focus

Continuous Shooting Mode

Photo Review Button

Stitch Assist

CCD and RGB Color Filter

The same 2.2 Megapixel CCD and RGB Primary Color Filter that ensure vivid video give you brilliant digital photographs. The Simultaneous Photo Record feature also lets you capture those still images while shooting video.

DIGIC DV

Because Canon's exclusive DIGIC DV signal processing circuit processes video and still images differently, you get uncompromising image quality for both. Video and still images have different color requirements and DIGIC DV technology processes the two signals accordingly. That means digital photos are maximized for viewing on computer monitors and as prints. DIGIC DV is just one of Canon's DV Photo Plus technologies that help to unleash the performance potential of the Optura S1.

Simultaneous Photo Recording

Capture e-mail ready digital photos to a memory card while you record video.

Auto-Exposure Dial with 12 Shooting Modes

New to the Optura line-up, the Optura S1 features an Auto Exposure dial that allows you to quickly and easily choose between 12 shooting modes, including: Portrait, Sports, Night, Snow, Beach, Sunset, Spotlight and Fireworks. Each adjusts your camcorder's settings to compensate for different lighting conditions and different subjects. You even get a Skin Detail mode that softens detail for more flattering portraits and close-ups.

In addition, when you want to be in control of depth of field, the Optura S1 gives you an AV (Aperture Priority) setting so you can select the aperture of the lens. And, a TV (Shutter Priority) setting lets you select a faster shutter speed for sharp, crisp images of fast-moving action.

Image Settings

Four different image settings are available depending on your subject: Vivid, Neutral, Low Sharpening, Soft Skin Detail.

Built-in Flash

Like any good digital still camera, the Optura S1 features a built-in flash with red-eye reduction so you shoot indoors or late into the night.

Flexible Auto Focus

9 Point Auto Intelligent Auto Focus (AiAF) keeps your subject in sharp focus, even if they're not in the center of the frame.

Continuous Shooting Mode

This unique feature lets you shoot a series of still images at 3fps (1632x1224) or 5fps (1280x960) for sports, action, or kids just having fun.

Photo Review Button

Not sure about your last shot? The Optura S1's Photo Review button let's you quickly view the most recent photo.

Stitch Assist

Stitch Assist software lets you create an impressive panoramic image from a series of still images. Simply capture your panoramic scene in more than one image, then download the images into your computer. Stitch Assist aligns and crops the images into a single, ultra-wide panoramic photograph.

Perfect Exposures

Auto Exposure Bracketing

Metering Modes

Auto Exposure Bracketing

Shoot photos like a pro with Auto Exposure Bracketing. This feature lets you capture three digital images with a single push of a button: one at normal exposure, one overexposed, and one underexposed.

Metering Modes

The Optura S1's Evaluative, Center-weighted Average, and Spot Metering Modes give the advanced photographer shooting versatility under a variety of lighting conditions.

Share Your Video
Inside the Optura S1's cool, compact exterior is a variety of features that make it fast and easy to share your videos.

Firewire / IEEE 1394 DV Terminal

Motion JPEG Mode

Analog Line-In / Converter

Firewire / IEEE 1394 DV Terminal

Otherwise known as Firewire or iLink, the Optura S1's IEEE 1394 DV Terminal is a high-speed digital interface that ensures virtually no loss of video or audio quality when transferring videos to a computer. Simply use a DV cable to connect the camcorder to your computer's DV Terminal and you can be sure that your favorite, recorded moments retain their pristine image and sound.

Motion JPEG Mode

With the Optura S1's Motion JPEG Mode you can record movie clips directly to the camcorder's memory card, transfer it to your computer, and e-mail or stream it over the web. When using an SD Memory Card, you can also record for the full length of the card. That's a 60-minute movie with a 512MB card. (With MultiMedia Cards, movie clips are limited to 10 seconds in 320 X 240 resolution, and 30 seconds in 160 X 120.)

Analog Line-In / Converter

By using audio/video cables (composite) or S-Video, it's possible to send an analog video signal from your TV, VCR or a camcorder into the Optura S1 and record it onto DV. Similarly, you can output an analog signal via composite or S-Video cables to an analog device such as a TV or VCR.

Share Your Photos
The Optura S1 allows you to do more than just shoot great photos. It also gives you the power to effortlessly transform, share and print those images.

Print and Share

miniSDTM Memory Card

Print and Share

Print & Share -- another of the powerful Canon DV Photo Plus technologies -- turns your Optura S1 into a photo lab in the palm of your hand. Simply connect your camcorder directly to select Canon printers or any PictBridge-compatible printer with the supplied USB cable. Then, with nothing more than the touch of the Print and Share button, you can print directly from your Optura S1 without going through a computer. (The same button lets you quickly download images to your computer.) And because the camcorder tags each photo you take with information based on Exif 2.2 Print standards, your printer is able to produce more realistic images. Print and Share also gives you all the printing controls you need, right in your camcorder. Crop and rotate your photos, or choose borderless prints. With the Optura S1's Print and Share capability, no one has to wait to share in the memories.

miniSDTM Memory Card

You can also share your photos, thanks to the camcorder's miniSDTM Memory Card. Popularly used in today's newest cell phones and half the size of a standard SD card, the miniSDTM Card offers the benefit of high-capacity storage in a very small size.
