CMOS Sensor<br/> The EOS-1Ds advantage begins with a full-frame CMOS sensor - developed and manufactured by Canon - with an imaging area of 24 x 36mm, the same dimensions used by full-frame 35mm SLRs. Finally, every EF lens will work the same on a digital SLR as it does on your 35mm film cameras, with the same coverage. Even for wide-angle shooters. The CMOS sensor of the EOS-1Ds has 11.1 million effective pixels with a maximum resolution of 4,064 x 2,704 pixels. This almost doubles the resolution currently considered state-of-the-art by most professionals, resulting in a quantum leap in digital image quality. High Performance Imaging Engine<br/> The EOD-1Ds's imaging engine is one of the keys to its exceptional speed and image quality. This advanced "chip" processes image data to achieve the same color accuracy and wide tonal range as the high quality slide films often favored by professionals. And even with almost twice the pixel resolution of previous pro cameras, it still supports a 10-frame buffer memory at framing rates up to 3 fps!
3 fps Continuous Shooting
3 fps continuous shooting for up to 10 shots, even at the highest quality setting, is made possible by the speedy data reading of the CMOS sensor and the rapid image processing of the high-performance imaging engine. The EOS-1Ds delivers all the strength, responsiveness, and versatility you expect from Canon. AF System
The Area AF system offers a 45-point Area AF for framing freedom and reliable AF performance. It also offers 45-point Manual, 11-point Manual, and 9-point Manual settings. Points are spread over an 8 x 15mm AF ellipse that covers a large part of the image. 6 Metering Options
Six metering options provide total exposure control in almost any situation. In addition to 21-zone Evaluative Metering, there is Center-weighted Metering, Central Partial Metering, Central Spot Metering, Focusing Point-linked Spot Metering and Canon's unique Multi-Spot metering - the EOS-1Ds can automatically average up to eight separate spot meter readings. Custom Function
Custom Functions provide a method of tailoring certain features and controls to meet your needs. The EOS-1Ds has 21 Custom Functions, many similar to the EOS-1v professional film camera, but of course some exclusive to digital. Personal Function
26 Personal Functions are part of the EOS-1Ds's driver software and can be installed in the camera at any time. Combined with the built-in Custom Functions, they provide professional flexibility unmatched by any other digital SLR. Quick Response
The EOS-1Ds offers highly responsive performance. Its shutter release time lag of 55ms matches that of the professional EOS-1v film camera. Black-out time between exposures is a barely perceptible 87ms and Canon's "Active Mirror Control" technology regulates the up and down movement of the mirror to minimize vibration and stabilize the viewfinder image. High Speed Shutter
The same durable, high-speed, high-precision mechanical shutter that professionals have come to trust in the EOS-1v is employed in the EOS-1Ds. Shutter speed can be selected between 1/8000 and 30 seconds in 1/3-stop increments, with X-sync up to 1/250 sec.

Lightweight yet durable, with a chassis and external covers made of magnesium alloy, the EOS-1Ds is thoroughly sealed and protected from water and dust infiltration. Its rugged design meets professional demands for even the most hostile environments.

RAW + JPEG Recording<br/> With the EOS-1Ds you can record every shot in both RAW and JPEG formats simultaneously, at full speed, for maximum productivity. The RAW image format is ideal for printing and processing, while the JPEG format is convenient for quickly checking images and transferring data. White Balance<br/> The EOD-1Ds enables accurate overall color balance in different lighting conditions through an incredible array of white balance (WB) options, including 10 white balance modes, a white balance bracketing function and a Canon exclusive - manual adjustment of color temperature in 100K increments from 2,800K - 10,000K. Color Matrix<br/> Canon's unique Color Matrix function lets you select any of five different color characteristics (color saturation and color space). The Color Matrix 4 setting, for example, is optimized for Adobe RHN 1998 and provides a broad color spectrum with its low saturation. ISO Speed Setting<br/> The EOS-1Ds gives you unprecedented freedom with ISO speeds. Select any speed in the normal 100 to 1250 ISO range, in 1/3-stop increments, or even a setting of 50 via Custom Function 3-1 (C.Fn-3-1). ISO speed bracketing is also possible (&#177;3 stops in 1/3-stop increments), enabling exposure to be varied while keeping the same shutter speed and aperture settings. Processing Parameters<br/> Default imaging settings can be adjusted in the camera, using Processing Parameters. Shooting in high or low contrast conditions? Add a parameter set with an adjusted Tone Curve*, and call it up on the menu whenever you want. Similar changes can be made to the amount of JPEG compression, and two types of in-camera sharpening.<br/> * Tone Curve settings must be customized and uploaded into the EOS-1Ds via computer. Enlargement Mode<br/> The Enlargement Mode (P.Fn-30) allows magnified viewing of images on the camera's LCD. When the functions is ON and a picture is taken, a small JPEG image is created and saved within the main image file. By pressing the display button, the JPEG image is displayed on the LCD, with a navigator at the bottom right that allows selection of the area to be magnified. This feature enables users to check images for camera movement, focusing accuracy, facial expression, etc.

EF Lenses
The EOS-1Ds is fully compatible with all Canon EF lenses, which are acclaimed by professionals worldwide. Since the EOS-1Ds's effective field coverage is equivalent to 1x their indicated focal length, all EF lenses - from ultra-wide-angle to super-telephoto - will behave exactly as they do on 35mm SLR cameras. Of course, TS-E series lenses are no exception, and Shift and Tilt functions can be used without limitation. These are huge benefits to photojournalists, studio photographers and many other professional shooters.

The new stand-alone File Viewer Utility enables the "Development" of RAW images, viewing of images, and customization of camera settings right in the camera. It comes bundled with software that supports the latest operating systems and handles various tasks, including image management, remote camera control, layout printing and image editing.

Remote Capture
Users can operate the camera remotely from their computer using RemoteCapture software and the supplied interface cable. The software supports single-frame and continuous shooting, as well as self-timer and interval shooting with extended control ranges. Images can be recorded directly to the computer with or without a CF card in the camera.

ZoomBrowser EX
This software allows users to download, upload, view, manage, edit and convert JPEG and RAW files on their computer. Editing features include cropping, adjustment of contrast and saturation, and alteration of image dimensions and resolution. Output options include Flashpix, JPEG, TIFF and BMP.

Data Verification Kit
The EOS-1Ds is the world's first digital SLR that can prove its images are unaltered, original files. Optional Data Verification Kit DVK-E1, consisting of a dedicated IC card and card reader together with special Windows 2000/XP software, is available to verify that EOS-1Ds images are absolutely unaltered. The system is so precise, that even the slightest discrepancy is detected. This may well be a landmark for digital imaging in law enforcement and many other documentary uses.

IEEE 1394
The EOS-1Ds comes equipped with an IEEE 1394 ("Firewire") interface, allowing speedy plug-and-play data communication with computers. For studio photography, new 4.5m IEEE 1394 cables are available. The camera automatically formats the CF card according to the maximum storage capacity.
