State-of-the-art technology combines strength and elegance. In developing the EOS-1V as a next-generation professional SLR camera, Canon sought out the strongest available body materials for both functional attractiveness and high-level rigidity. The magnesium alloy used for the EOS-1V is lightweight, yet possesses exceptional strength. This new material is hard to machine and was initially thought to be unsuitable for molding the delicate curved surfaces of the EOS body. Canon solved this problem with the application of "thixo-molding", an advanced injection molding technology. This lightweight body is the perfect blend of rigidity, durability and total precision. Canon built the body of the EOS-1V to deliver top performance regardless of the shooting environment. Top priority was placed on the precise machining of all parts. The aperture and hybrid framework structure, which serve as the base for various parts and fittings, are diecast aluminum, with glass-fiber reinforced polycarbonate resin, which is equal in strength to metal. The main outside covers are made of magnesium alloy. The lightweight body benefits from remarkably improved rigidity, precision, and durability, realized by the optimum use of carefully chosen high-tech materials. The EOS-1V's body sets new standards for water and dust resistance. Professional cameras must be impervious to sharp changes in temperature; they must also be resistant to water, sand and dust. In other words, the professional camera must work smoothly under a wide range of conditions. The EOS-1V has been developed and manufactured to reflect feedback from professional photographers who work in severe environments, as well as Canon's own expertise in this area. Following a reassessment of the severity of conditions that may apply in some shooting situations, Canon has succeeded in raising the level of water and dust resistance. The 72 major body seams and moving parts, such as the shutter button, selector buttons and Main/Quick Control Dials, are carefully sealed with silicone rubber, and the edges of the back cover are thoroughly finished. Furthermore, the battery chamber located inside the new grip GR-E2 is protected by packing, while the insides of function buttons, found on the upper left of the body, are protected from dust and water by a silicone rubber boot. The satisfyingly solid feel and sound of the back cover being closed will tell you that the EOS-1V stands up to the elements like no other camera. The EOS-1V's revolutionary shutter has been tested to 150,000 cycles.
The EOS-1V's electronically controlled rotary magnet shutter has been designed to eliminate the possibility of operational trouble. This shutter unit ensures constant operation that remains as accurate as its original performance even after long use and under severe shooting conditions. In this shutter system, the first and second shutter curtains are controlled by a non-contact rotary magnet, which does not suffer sticking problems due to dust accumulation. The shutter blades are made of carbon fiber and super-duralumin, for high reliability in all shooting conditions over extended use. This has been confirmed by in-house testing in which the unit recorded in excess of 150,000 shutter-cycles. The unit performs high-speed shutter operation with exceptional accuracy at a maximum shutter speed of 1/8,000 second and a maximum flash sync speed of 1/250 second. What is more, battery power consumption is minimized because the unit requires no power to hold the second shutter curtain open during bulb exposure. Accordingly, it realizes up to 1,000 hours of operation with the 2CR5 battery at room temperature.
At a rate of 9 fps, AI Servo AF delivers the fastest predictive focusing in the world*. *Assumes the use of the Power Drive Booster PB-E2 with the Ni-MH pack NP-E2 *Among 35mm AF SLR cameras with movable mirror as of February 2000. The predictive AI Servo AF system allows the tracking of fast-moving objects while maintaining precise focus. This system affords impressive results in terms of continuous shooting and boasts excellent sequential processing efficiency. Sequential processing regulates an array of events within the exposure process, including the arithmetic processing of AE and AF, the driving of the lens, aperture control, and movement of the mirror and shutter curtains. In addition to developing new sequencing for the EOS-1V, every operation and its respective control time sequence has been reexamined in order to reduce operation time and realize parallel processing. A significant step in the technology of the EOS-1V is the newly adopted Active Mirror Control method, which reduces the operation time of the mirror to allow shooting at a rate of 9 fps. This device is fundamental to the stability of the AI Servo AF system. As for precision, the EOS-1V is capable of heightened focusing accuracy thanks to a newly developed predictive algorithm. The sequential efficiency, mechanical improvements and focusing accuracy of the AI Servo AF system are capable of functioning with a high level of synergy for incredible results. In fact, the EOS-1V can pursue, focus and continually shoot an approaching subject at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31mph) to a point 8 m (26 ft) ahead of the camera (assuming use of an EF 300 mm f/2.8L IS USM lens). Amazing continuous shooting performance that can capture ten images in a single second. The EOS-1V features the world's fastest continuous shooting speed, enabling film transport at an astounding rate of 10 fps*. Now Canon gives you the power to transform one dramatic moment into a series of heart-stopping images. With the Power Drive Booster PB-E2 (driven by the NP-E2 Ni-MH Battery Pack) the EOS-1V allows unprecedented levels of visual creativity. Sensational gains in continuous shooting performance mean rapid film transport of up to 9 fps even in predictive AI Servo AF mode, which can focus track a subject approaching the camera at 50 km/h up to 8 meters away (with the EF 300 mm f/2.8L IS USM). What's more, even when set at an intermediate film transport speed of around 3 to 5 fps, the EOS-1V demonstrates outstanding basic performance. For example, the viewfinder blackout time is remarkably shortened, the minimum distance at which a high-speed moving subject can be autofocused is reduced, and so on. *Among 35mm AF SLR cameras with movable mirror as of February 2000. New technology realizes ultra-high continuous shooting speeds and a sharp viewfinder image, while Active Mirror Control remarkably reduces mirror blackout.
In order to control mirror bound, which is an obstacle to ultra-high-speed continuous shooting performance, Canon introduces an Active Mirror Control method that quickly reduces energy. This method replaces the conventional approach of suppressing mirror bound shock from the rear. With Canon's new method, mirror bounce is mechanically controlled. In other words, this ground-breaking mechanism reduces mirror shake, confining it to a short duration and suppressing the shake immediately after it occurs. As a result, mirror blackout time is remarkably reduced. Because the wave height of mirror shake is low after its bounce is suppressed, the finder image stabilizes quickly after the shutter is released in ordinary shooting mode, as well as in continuous shooting. The user always has a clear and sharp viewfinder image.
Up to 20 Custom Functions with 63 settings can be selected to match your shooting style. The Custom Functions serve to adapt the EOS-1V to the photographer's preferences. The EOS-1V features 20 Custom Functions that enable the input of detailed selections and settings. Most Custom Function items are numbered in the same way as for the EOS-1N, for the convenience of users of that model. Arbitrary setting of Custom Functions can be performed either on the camera itself, or on a personal computer with optional EOS Link Software ES-E1 installed. Optional EOS Link Software ES-E1 enables advanced customization, and management of shooting data, through PC connectivity. If a PC is linked with the EOS-1V, camera functionality and the capacity for representation are markedly expanded. Simply connect the EOS-1V, via the Connecting Cable ES, to a PC with EOS Link Software ES-E1 installed. Once connection is established you can achieve various forms of customization, function extension, data download by following messages on the monitor screen. ES-E1 software is primarily intended for advanced Personal Function customization, so users of the EOS-1V can program it to reflect their personal preferences, shooting purposes and conditions. It also allows the management of data relating to settings used for exposed film. - EOS Link Software ES-E1 is compatible only with pre-installed versions of the Windows& 98 operating system. Intensive management of exposure data, eagerly awaited by professional and advanced amateur photographers alike, is now a reality. Since the EOS-1V has a built-in memory to save shooting data, selectable from 25 items, including shutter speed and aperture values, are automatically saved in the camera's memory each time the shutter is released. At the same time, an arbitrary two-digit number and an auto-incrementing three-digit ID number are automatically imprinted on the film leader. This means the film and shooting data can be matched. The storage capacity of the built-in memory varies depending on the number of items to be recorded. In general, data can be saved for 50 to 200 rolls of film with 36 exposures, with data for 100 rolls being recorded in the standard setting. If all shooting data is input to a PC via the EOS Link Software ES-E1, it can be managed intensively for reading and editing. If scanned images are attached as thumbnails to the shooting data, the arrangement and searching of data can be performed more quickly and efficiently. This software thus enables users to manage film data effectively.
The EOS-1V's capacity to capture moving subjects with the outstanding tracking performance and high focusing speed of 45-point Area AF propels auto focusing into the new millennium 45-point Area AF is the result of Canon's pursuit of an AF system that allows continuous shooting ease and expanded framing freedom. The 45 focusing points are densely packed within an 8 x 15 mm zone and can be manually or automatically selected to meet the needs of the situation. When multiple points are selected, AF system capabilities are significantly extended. Born of Canon's original technology, this system has been refined for the EOS-1V to ensure the unconditional reliability, accuracy and high focusing speeds requisite for professional use. While photographers have the freedom to frame images through the viewfinder as they choose, the lens is automatically brought into focus as soon as the active focusing points cover the subject. Like a human eye, Canon's 45-point Area AF tracks and aims true. This is typical of Canon's state-of-the-art AF technology, recognized by professional photographers everywhere. A unique sensor design vastly expands the range of lens/extender combinations with AF capability. The Area AF system is comprised of two kinds of sensor elements that are capable of remarkable focusing efficiency because they are able to complement and compensate for each other. Each of the 45 focusing points within the Area AF is composed of horizontal line detection sensors. These sensors operate with EF lenses having a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or larger. They are particularly well-suited to focusing on moving subjects. The central seven points of the Area AF sensor also incorporate vertical line detection sensors, six of which operate with EF lenses with maximum apertures of f/2.8 or larger and theoretically provide focusing precision three times as high as the vertical sensors. The design of the Area AF sensor effectively creates seven cross-type central points capable of unrivaled object recognition and exceptional accuracy. The central focusing point is capable of cross-type focusing with EF lenses having a maximum aperture of f/4 or greater, or focusing with horizontal component detection with EF lens/extender combinations having a maximum aperture as small as f/8. The result is an Area AF sensor system ideally equipped for excellent performance regardless of subject pattern; a system that brings out the true potential of Canon EF lenses and lens/extender combinations. Versatile composition with superb operability. The 45 focusing points of the EOS-1V provide unique functionality and a new level of focusing control. This system minimizes the problems of focus lock and recomposition, and brings an improved degree of fluidity to the creative process. At its simplest level, all 45 focusing points can be used simultaneously for optimum auto focus results. Focusing of this kind has the power to transform a simple snapshot into a precisely balanced image. However, the true benefits of 45-point focusing become more apparent when applied to more demanding situations. It's easy to switch to a preselected focusing point simply by pressing the Assist Button. When shooting conditions fluctuate, or fleeting photo opportunities arise, even the most agile photographer will be hard pressed to select just the right focusing point in time. Fortunately, the EOS-1V allows users to register any focusing point as a home position (HP) that can be restored from any focus setting, with a single press of the Assist Button*. This extremely handy feature allows photographers to adapt quickly to almost any situation. * The HP function is enabled by C.Fn-18. Sophisticated Auto Exposure Control. EOS-1V aims to capture the light as you see it. Canon's exclusive AIM (Advanced Integrated Multi-Point control) system integrates Area AF and all six metering modes available with the EOS-1V. Focus on a subject within the Area AF ellipse, and the EOS-1V will meter that area for the optimum result where it's needed most. All six metering modes use the 21-zone evaluative metering sensor. Six metering modes, three flash metering modes capture your vision in all manner of lighting situations. Six exposure modes for greater creative control. Establish EOS-1V Personal Function settings with a PC, to suit your preferences. Personal Functions* give even greater customized control over the EOS-1V than Custom Functions provide. If you use a PC with the optional EOS Link Software ES-E1, you can change, extend and limit the functions of the EOS-1V. In order to customize your EOS-1V to match your shooting purposes, you need only follow the menu and messages appearing on your monitor. ES-E1 software enables you to configure your EOS-1V like a custom-made camera. *To use Personal Functions, EOS Link Software ES-E1 is required.

Focusing Point Selection

Any one focusing point, 45-point automatic selection, can be registered by pressing the Assist Button and FE lock button. Pressing the Assist Button and focusing point selector switches to the registered focusing point.

Exposure Compensation
