Features

The CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens delivers the long focal length performance demanded by today's users of single-sensor large-format cameras for broadcast sports, nature cinematography, and digital filmmaking. With the world's longest focal length (75-1500mm with its built-in 1.5x extender) and highest (20x) magnification among super 35mm zoom lenses as of August 31, 2014, the CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens offers new creative opportunities possibilities for today's growing community of 4K, UHD, and HD image makers.

With a 20:1 zoom range that extends from a wide 50mm up to 1000mm, the CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens is the longest Super 35mm telephoto lens in the industry to date. The increased use of single-sensor large-format (super 35mm) cameras for such broadcast applications as sports may require an even longer focal range, so this lens also features a built-in 1.5x extender, lengthening its focal length to 75-1500mm. New creative opportunities include enabling single-sensor large-format camera users to obtain close-up 4K imaging of wildlife subjects or sports players while still maintaining the physical distances necessary in such shooting situations.

The CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens is the product of years of Canon expertise in such areas as large-diameter aspherical lens technology, optical layout optimization, and the latest optical simulation technologies. Developed using Canon?s leading-edge optical and optomechanical design tools and advanced glass materials, the CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens corrects nearly all optical aberrations, and delivers high image quality that extends from the image center to all edges. The result is the maintenance of superb 4K optical imaging performance throughout its 20x zoom range, and even when the lens? built-in 1.5x extender is employed.

The CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens perfectly covers a 31.4mm image format and delivers this amazing 4K optical performance across its entire zooming range, which ranges from 75mm to 1500mm with its built-in 1.5x extender. The minimum object distance (MOD) of the lens is 11.5 ft. (3.5 m); the lens front diameter is 136mm.

The CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens features a removable Digital Drive unit to accommodate either broadcast or cinema-style production. The Drive unit integrates a convenient zoom/rocker switch, programmable zoom and focus settings, and a 12-pin connector that carries standard broadcast lens serial communication. Compatible cameras can supply power to the Drive unit via this connection and support remote iris operation. Three 20-pin connectors on the Drive unit enable the zoom, focus and iris to be remotely controlled by using broadcast type servo-demand controls. The 20-pin connectors also output 16-bit precision data that enables the lens to be used with virtual studio systems. Removal of the Drive unit enables traditional full manual cinema-style operation, and the lens also features clearly engraved barrel markings, an 11-blade iris to help achieve smooth ?bokeh,? and gearing that is fully compatible with lens-support rods, matte boxes, and other cinema accessories.

The manual focus control of the lens has a total rotation angle of 180 degrees. If the Drive unit is removed for a specific production and then re-mounted, it can be done in any rotation position and there is no need to adjust gear positions (zoom, iris, and focus).

Although it's an extremely high-performance lens, the CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens weighs only 14.6 lbs. (6.6kgm) and has an overall length of only 15.9 inches (405.2mm) ? a carryable combination that can readily support portable documentary and sports shooting.

The odd number of iris blades within the CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens provides a softer image by suppressing reflection of opposing beams of light. This 11-bladed iris is designed to enable cinematographers to achieve smooth "bokeh" effects that exploit the beauty of the shallow depth of field that can be captured with today?s large-format (super 35mm) single-sensor cameras.

The removable Digital Drive unit on the CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens is ergonomically designed for operator comfort and integrates a newly developed encoder that provides users with immediate start-up and control of the lens. The Drive unit includes a convenient zoom/rocker switch that enables camera operators to smoothly zoom at a variety of speeds, from a very fast 1.5 seconds to a very slow 180 seconds from full-wide to full-telephoto. The Drive unit also includes a compact LCD display that enables camera operators to easily access other lens functions, including fully programmable zoom, iris, and focus position/speed settings. The Drive unit's encoder technology is also capable of relaying accurate analog and serial data for zoom, focus and iris settings through a 20-pin connector, allowing for the lens to be incorporated into most existing virtual imaging systems.

The removable Digital Drive unit on the CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens includes a convenient zoom/rocker switch that enables camera operators to smoothly zoom at a variety of speeds, from a very fast 1.5 seconds to a very slow 180 seconds from full-wide to full-telephoto. A camera operator can also pre-program zoom speeds using the Drive unit, if they choose to do so.

The CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens is compliant with industry-standard camera-to-lens communication protocols to help ensure compatibility and maximum performance with multiple brands and models of 4K, UHD, and HD cameras. These standards include 12-pin serial communication (common to major broadcast camera brands), Cooke's /i Technology, and Canon EOS-LENS data communication technology (employed by the Canon EOS C500, EOS-1D C, EOS C300, and EOS C100 Cinema cameras). Specific types of data-management functions involving focus, zoom, iris and other settings can vary, depending on camera brands and models. In the case of the Canon Cinema EOS system, precise lens data ? including aperture setting ? is displayed in the EOS camera's viewfinder, as well as recorded in the video file as metadata along with the model name of the lens and the given focal-length setting.

For broadcast-style use, a 12-pin connector on the Digital Drive unit of the CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens carries the standard serial communication for broadcast lenses. Broadcast cameras can also supply power to the Drive unit for support of remote iris operation via this connection.

The removable Digital Drive unit on the CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens integrates a 16-bit high-resolution encoder that generates precise positional data ? zoom, iris, and focus ? on all lens settings. This highly accurate lens data can be relayed via any of the Drive unit?s three 20-pin connectors, allowing for the lens to be incorporated into most existing virtual imaging systems.

The entire lens employs a tough, optimal chassis structure, is weather and shock resistant, and features the environmental-performance capabilities needed to stand up to typically unforgiving broadcast sports and wildlife shooting environments. Sturdiness, durability, weather-proofing, integrity of lens element mountings, and mechanical strategies all help ensure maintenance of optical precision over wide environmental ranges.

The CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens is available in either PL or EF mount. The PL mount version is model number CN20x50 IAS H/P1; the EF mount version is CN20x50 IAS H/E1. The mounts are interchangeable at an authorized Canon Service facility.
