The MREAL system is designed to integrate into an enterprise workflow.

What Is Mixed Reality

 Mixed Reality is the process of combining the real world together with virtual images.  The result is an interactive and immersive experience allowing users to be immersed in 3D models while retaining a view of their real world context.  Designed specifically for enterprise customers, MREAL offers more realism than conventional virtual reality, enabling users to see, experience, and interact with their concepts as if they were lifelike experiences.

The Canon MREAL System for Mixed Reality is a hardware-software combination that allows enterprise organizations to bring 3D models to life for more immersive engineering, design, education, training, and interaction.  The technology leverages four key components to include:


  1. Canon MREAL Displays – The display brings a view of virtual images seamlessly superimposed onto physical, real-world environments. Computer graphic files are overlaid with real-world images the user sees, which are then displayed in one view to create three-dimensional depth. Canon's portfolio of display options includes multiple form factors: the MREAL Display MD-10, HM-A1 Head-Mounted Display (HMD), HH-A1 Hand Held Display (HHD), and in conjunction with a Canon Network Camera.
  2. Canon MREAL Platform Software – The MREAL system is designed to integrate into a customer's existing workflow. Canon's proprietary MREAL Platform is a middleware solution for viewing designs from leading 3D CAD and design applications in Mixed Reality with the MREAL Display.
  3. Plug-Ins & MREAL Visualizer – Canon offers software plug-ins to some of the most commonly used 3D design and visualization tools including 3DEXCITE DELTAGEN and Unity 3D. The plug-ins enable users to integrate MREAL into the existing workflow. In addition, the Canon-proprietary MREAL Visualizer software allows enterprises to take existing 3D and CAD files from a variety of programs – including CATIA, Siemens NX, Creo, and SOLIDWORKS– and transform them into mixed reality experiences.
  4. Positional Tracking - To create an immersive, interactive experience, the Canon MREAL System supports multiple positioning solutions including third-party optical cameras, magnetic sensors, and Canon-proprietary markers that can be configured in a number of ways. The MREAL Network Camera leverages state-of-the-art imaging technologies to create an immersive experience. This display captures the Mixed Reality experience from an alternate raised viewing position, providing a "birds-eye view."


The Network Camera offers observers with another perspective of both the image and real subjects, which can allow for additional participation and collaboration even from those that are not directly interacting. Adding to the first-person perspective of the Head-Mounted Display or Hand-Held Display, the network camera allows users to observe scenarios such as how a customer interacts with a virtual object, or get a big picture view of the experience as a whole.

Tracking Options


To offer customers the maximum flexibility for their particular needs, the Canon MREAL System for Mixed Reality supports a range of positional tracking solutions.


  • Optical Cameras: Ideal for permanent, large-scale installations of Mixed Reality, optical cameras offer wide-range positioning coverage for the MREAL system. Compatible Optical Sensors include products from: Vicon , OptiTrack , and ART Motion Analysis. In addition, the MREAL system also interfaces with other leading optical cameras through VRPN.
  • Magnetic Sensors: Magnetic sensors are a flexible solution offering an MR experience best suited for smaller, more compact spaces. Compatible Magnetic Sensors include: POLHEMUS FASTRAK .
  • Markers: Canon-produced registration markers are a cost effective solution that allows for a tactile dimension that enhances the realism of the MR experience. In addition, a carpet marker configuration offers a highly-portable solution, allowing the system to be easily transported to different locations.
  • Gyroscopic Sensors: The gyroscopic sensor allows the system to maintain tracking even when rotated out of view of a sensor in order to heighten the sense of realism. Compatible Gyroscopic Sensors include: InterSense InertiaCube.
  • Other devices that support the Virtual Reality Peripheral Network (VRPN) Standard.
