What More Could You Ask for in a Lens?

This lens has a lot going for it already being the brightest ultra wide-angle lens that Canon has made, but that is just the beginning. With impressive resolution, this lens the pinnacle of high image quality while also expanding the comprehensive “f/1.4 L Series” family of lenses that revolve around useful features like an iris ring that makes them exceptional for both still photography and video creation. The quality and construction is top notch with the first-ever application of a Fluorite lens element in a canon ultra wide-angle lens, an Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) element, and a Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics (BR) element to minimize chromatic aberration, and 3 GMo aspheric lenses for sharpness around the edges. Subwavelength Structure Coating (SSC) and Air Sphere Coating (ASC) reduce ghosting and flare. The lenses in this f/1.4 L Series family share the same basic dimensions and weight to make it easy to work with multiple prime lenses with the same muscle memory, and without having to rebalance a gimbal, or change your whole video rig setup.

Incredible Clarity, Even in the Corners!

This ultra wide-angle lens delivers remarkable sharpness from edge to edge, with exceptional clarity even in the corners of every frame. This performance is made possible by the use of premium optical elements and a design that fully leverages the large diameter mount and short back focus distance. By optimally arranging a variety of advanced optical materials, the lens effectively suppresses chromatic and spherical aberrations, ensuring crisp, high-resolution imagery across the entire image field.

Focus on Focus

The RF14mm F1.4 L VCM Lens features a unique focusing system. There is a VCM (Voice Coil Motor) that powers the primary rear focus unit that is incredibly fast, accurate and quiet (great for video). One important note about the VCM is that it requires power to hold its position, so when the camera is off, or the lens is not attached to a camera, you may hear and feel slight movement. This is normal, and there is extra cushioning inside the lens to help prevent damage in this situation.

A hallmark of the Canon hybrid lenses, focus breathing ensures that a lens maintains a consistent field of view while racking focus, preventing the distracting “zoom like” effect that can occur as focus shifts. This stability is especially valuable for video work, where smooth, natural focus transitions help maintain visual continuity and keep the viewer’s attention on the subject. For photographers, reduced breathing also improves composition accuracy, making it easier to frame precisely without the image subtly changing size as focus is adjusted.

Top Improvements vs. Previous Canon EF-Mount Ultra Wide Lenses

Improved sharpness, especially at the edges and corners. Great reduction in chromatic and other aberrations. Significant reductions in lens flare, in strong back-lit scenes. A total re-design of the 14mm lens brings all these to EOS R-series users. Canon’s L-series optical technologies are showcased here, with multiple types of specialized lens elements, including one Canon’s BR (Blue spectrum Refractive) optics and the first-ever application of a Fluorite lens element in a Canon ultra wide-angle lens. And two distinct types of Canon-developed lens coating technologies — Canon’s Air Sphere Coating (ASC) and Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) — are keys to reducing flare and ghosting.

Two stops faster than Canon’s previous EF-mount 14mm f/2.8 L II USM lens — and likewise, two stops faster than f/2.8 zoom lenses — the RF14mm F2.8 L VCM lens opens new doors to critical still-image and video users. Its ultra wide coverage makes it ideal for dramatic creative imagery, as well as for subjects ranging from interiors and landscapes to music video productions. And with its maximum f/1.4 lens aperture, this lens becomes ideal for low-light work, up to and including starscapes. The combination of such wide-angle coverage with a wide f/1.4 lens aperture is an optical mountain for lens designers, but Canon’s engineers have graced the 14mm F1.4 L VCM lens with incredible performance. And that can equal incredible opportunities for visual creators.

A specific design goal of the RF14mm F1.4 VCM lens was superb performance in the challenging environment of starscape photography — where even the slightest aberrations at wide apertures can be immediately noticeable by critical users in finished, high-resolution images. The above-mentioned specialized optics combine for what may be Canon’s finest lens to date for starscape imagery — and a huge improvement in astrophotography image quality, vs. the previous EF 14mm f/2.8 L II design.

The RF14mm F1.4 L VCM lens, as the name suggests, is another member of Canon’s VCM lens series. This is truly a hybrid lens series — each VCM lens has consistent length and widthFootnote2, and consistent placement of manual focus rings. This consistency simplifies lens changes for video users working with rigs or other support devices. And, it features a manually-adjustable Iris Ring, allowing critical video users smooth manual aperture adjustments if desired. Excellent control of “focus breathing” is another big part of the optical design. But to be clear: any of the VCM lenses, including the 14mm f/1.4, are spectacular for still-image work, and should never be considered as “video-only” optics.

A relatively recent technology introduction in Canon’s RF lens line, VCM focus drive motors offer superb power and torque, to rapidly move heavier groups of internal focus elements for swift and virtually silent AF performance. These are up to the dual challenges of both extremely quick AF for still-image shooting, but smooth and positive focus transitions during video recording with EOS R-series cameras. And, compared to the ring-type Ultrasonic Motors (USM) used in the previous EF-mount 14mm f/2.8 L lens, the VCM motor design has noticeable benefits in reducing overall lens diameter as well.

A stunning reduction in lens diameter and weight is achieved by the RF14mm F1.4’s optical and mechanical design, vs. the previous EF14mm f/2.8L II lens. A wider maximum aperture normally means an increase in size and weight. But the combination of the overall mirrorless structure and Canon’s innovative designs make this lens lighter and slimmer in diameter than the previous f/2.8 version. Again, the RF14mm lens shares common exterior design and most dimensions with previous RF-mount VCM fixed focal length lenses.

Conveniently located on the side of the lens barrel, one Lens Function Button can be user-customized in the camera’s menu to perform any one of a multitude of potential tasks. For users who desire, it can mean instant access to an important camera setting, feature or focus setting. With an advanced camera like the EOS R6 Mark III, any one of 77 different possible functions (plus totally disabling the Lens Function Button) can be chosen in the camera’s Customize Buttons menu.

Eleven aperture blades in the RF14mm lens’s diaphragm preserve smooth rendering of out-of-focus in video and still images — especially at close focus distances — even when conditions require the aperture to be stopped-down from its maximum f/1.4 opening.

What Technology Makes This Lens Special?
