This became his signature as evidenced in a group of nine photographs he created in 1973 titled, Things are Queer. Born in McKeesport, PA, he received a BA from the University of Denver. Michals has photographed influential artists including Andy Warhol, Rene Magritte, and Marcel Duchamp, often marking his prints with poetic writings and observations about his subjects (blending images and text). Michals says: “I believe in the imagination. What I cannot see is infinitely more important than what I can see.”

Duane Michals creates narratives within a series of images by blending them with text in a format similar to cinematic sequences. This became his signature as evidenced in a group of nine photographs he created in 1973 titled, Things are Queer. Born in McKeesport, PA, he received a BA from the University of Denver.
