Canon PC850 and PC870 Copiers
Details
Canon Inc. (Japan) issued a product advisory in Japan for the Canon PC850 (NP-160) and PC870 (NP-165) cartridge-type copiers. These copiers were manufactured and marketed between 1994 and 2001.
While the possibility is quite remote, the solder used on the circuit boards inside certain of these products can, with sufficient aging and if subjected to strong impacts, crack. The cracked solder can, in turn, under certain conditions, cause a short circuit, which could result in smoke or fire inside the copier.
In addition, under certain environmental conditions, a high level of condensation at particular locations on the copiers’ circuit boards could short-circuit the voltage control, resulting in smoke emission or fire inside the copiers.
There have been 6 confirmed incidents of smoke emission or fire – all in Japan – out of the approximately 105,000 PC850 and PC870 copiers produced worldwide. No incidents have been reported in the United States.
