Oklahoma City Community College Transforms Campus Communications With the Support of Canon Production Technology
Oklahoma City Community College’s in-plant plays a critical role in supporting communication and instruction across campus. The team produces a mix of academic and administrative pieces, including curriculum materials, test packets, and instructional booklets, as well as materials for events like commencement ceremonies and performances hosted by the Visual and Performing Arts Center.
In recent years, the in-plant team, led by Communications and Printing Operations Manager Justin Van Nest, has worked to strengthen its production capabilities and remove printing bottlenecks. Prior to adopting Canon technology, maintaining consistent quality often required time-consuming setups and frequent adjustments, which slowed production and placed added pressure on the team.
That changed when the college brought in two Canon imagePRESS C810 digital presses. According to Justin, the C810s immediately helped to transform the operation, delivering fast production speeds; vibrant, vivid images; and a level of consistency the team had not experienced before. Over time, the presses proved they could reliably support a busy campus environment with minimal downtime.
But as print volumes continued to grow and expectations around turnaround times became more demanding, Justin started to investigate how the in-plant could take the next step forward. The Approach
While researching the next addition to their production fleet, the team knew one thing for certain: they wanted to stay with Canon. In October 2023, the V1000 joined the fleet, ushering in a new era of production printing.
The Results
The V1000 built on the reliability the team already trusted from the C810s, while introducing a new level of speed and automation. Projects that require a large volume of prints, such as commencement ceremonies and performing arts events, could now be completed faster. Color accuracy, especially for the college’s branded colors, was also easier to achieve and maintain.
Ease of use was another advantage. Student workers regularly support the in-plant during peak periods, and the V1000’s intuitive interface and clear prompts allow them to operate the system confidently with minimal training.
The V1000 has also expanded the department’s media capabilities. The ability to print on synthetic materials has virtually eliminated the need for lamination. Items such as menus and table cards that once required additional finishing steps can now be produced efficiently in-house with outstanding durability.
The Future
Looking ahead, Justin and his team are already planning the next phase of growth. With the C810s approaching the end of their lease terms, they are beginning to explore inkjet production options that offer greater cost savings and continued improvements in quality. The team is also interested in expanding finishing capabilities, including embellishments, die cutting, and foiling.
